The Sherlockian Mantel of

Born in Chicago, Illinois,
I migrated to the West Coast to attend UC Berkeley in the turbulent '60's.
After attending Boalt Hall (the School of Law at UC Berkeley), I moved to Los
Angeles to practice law and make a family. I am married to the incredible
Sharon Flaum Klinger (a world-class stamp collector, bridge player, wino, and
Sherlockian spouse), and I have five wonderful kids--my stepson Matthew Flaum,
age 33 (a film editor, married to the beautiful Gabrielle Brooker), my
stepdaughter Wendy Flaum, age 31 (Vice President of Disney Channel), my
daughter Stacy, age 31 (a 2d grade teacher, married to fellow teacher Kennith
Harris), my son Evan, age 26, a student at UC Santa Cruz, and my youngest
stepdaughter, college student, and fellow Sherlockian, Amanda Flaum, age 22.
And there's another generation, too: Maya Felice Harris, age 2-1/2 and Devin
Leo Harris, age 7 months (see pictures below). Oops! Can't forget Max the
Rottweiler, Sharon's favorite animal in America! And his girlfriend Toby, the
Rottweiler puppy! Then there's Xander, the refugee cat, age 3 years, and his
companion Buffy aka Miss Kitty.
Specializing in tax, estate
planning, and general business law, I practice with the Century City firm of
Kopple & Klinger, LLP. Our address is 10866 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1500,
Los Angeles, CA 90024. Telephone (310) 475-1444; facsimile is (310) 475-2459.
Beginning in 1968, the
study of the lives of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson, M.D., has been
my consuming passion. I've published numerous articles on Sherlockiana (see
links below), a book called "The Life and Times of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, John
H. Watson, M.D., Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Other Notable Personages," also
linked below, and co-authored the revised edition of "'The Date Being--?': A
Compendium of Sherlockian Chronologies." In 1998, Gasogene Books published
"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," edited and annotated by me to update the
monumental work of "The Annotated Sherlock Holmes" edited by William S.
Baring-Gould since its publication in 1967. I was fortunate to receive the
"Special Sherlock Award" from "Sherlock Holmes Detective Magazine" for the
best Sherlockian work of 1998. This volume was followed by "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (2000), "A Study in Scarlet" (2001),
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" (2002), and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" (2003). In process is a three-volume work, "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes," to be published by W. W. Norton in 2004. Also in 1999, I was
deeply honored to be invested as a member of the Baker Street Irregulars,
under the title "The Abbey Grange." I'm now the Series Editor for the Manuscript Series of The Baker Street Irregulars, which has to date published the manuscript of Doyle's play "Angels of Darkness," a chapter of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," and hitherto-unknown G. K. Chesterton illustrations of the Sherlock Holmes Canon.
