Welcome to my web site. You will find pictures and descriptions of my
work in the gallery pages and a bit about the process of segmented wood turning
in the “About my work” section. I have
chosen representative examples of my work to include here. Some of the pieces are available for immediate
shipment, and those not immediately available can be commissioned for the
prices indicated. The cost of shipping
will be quoted when you inquire about a particular piece and added to the price
shown. Since each piece is one of a
kind, there will be slight differences in the commissioned pieces from those
shown in the galleries. I will be happy
to discuss any custom designed pieces that you may wish to have made for
special occasions or for special needs.
There is an almost infinite variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and
patterns possible, so if you can imagine something that you would like made,
I’ll work with you to create it. When
the piece is complete, you can inspect it and decide if you want to purchase
it, so there is no risk and no obligation.

The work presented on the following pages is representative of the
complex wood turnings that I make using a method known as “Segmented Wood
Turning”. In this type of wood turning,
the basic form to be turned (shaped on a lathe) is created by gluing small
pieces or segments of wood into multi-sided rings and then stacking and gluing
the rings together. The rough form made
this way is then placed on a lathe and turned or shaped to create the final
bowl, vase, or other vessel. All of this
is done to create an object that has an interesting design pattern and
shape. There is no colored paint used on
any of my pieces. All of the color
results from the natural colors of the woods I use. Following are some pictures that show the
steps required to make a tall vase:
In this picture the strips of wood from which the small
segments are cut and some of the small segments are shown ready to be glued
into rings. A lot of basic milling
of lumber to the correct thickness and width is needed to get to this point.
In this picture the small segments of wood have been
glued together to form twelve-sided rings.
Here the twelve sided rings have been stacked vertically
and are being glued together to produce the rough form that will be turned
on the lathe. In this case, the top
and bottom of the vase are still separated.
This picture shows the final rough form of the vase
attached to a device called a lathe chuck.
This chuck is then attached to the lathe and the final shaping of
the vase is completed.
After shaping on the lathe and finishing with clear
polyurethane and wax, the finished vase is ready for use. .
