Parapsychology

The study of those phenomena which are beyond the capacities of the "normal" mind, including those perceptions which do not depend on the physical organs of sense, and the power of mind over matter. This includes, but is not limited to, telepathy, clairvoyance, clairsentience, precognition, retro-cognition, psychokinesis, healing by touch or mind, seeing and reading auras, some forms of hypnosis, out-of-body experiences, materialization, "hauntings" poltergeist activity, "possession" and exorcism, near-death experiences, mediumship, psychometry, shamanism, witchcraft, and other forms of "non-usual" perception and action.

Recently, this has come to include the study of acupuncture, in its mental aspect, and chakras, or body energy centers, and "faith healing" through prayer, and healing through the "laying-on-of-hands" [including Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and other such modalities]. The medical community is increasingly interested in some of these as adjuncts to diagnosis and treatment, since several studies have shown significant positive results.

The "normal" mind is a construct, an average of abilities across a population. this means that there are a number of people whose abilities and perceptual thresholds  fall considerably away from the average or median ability, There are those who hear very faint sounds, smell faint odors, and see in the infrared range or in the ultraviolet range. Some of these people are unique; others can learn to accentuate their abilities of perception by suitable exercises. As science looks at the vast range of human capabilities, more and more comes to light about the varieties of perceptual abilities and paranormal capabilities.

Many people, not having had such experiences, are tempted to discredit anyone who studies them or is interested in the paranormal. However, many educational institutions world-wide have departments which study these phenomena. Visit a college homepage which has links to educational institutions and individuals doing research, as well as to other sites of interest in this field. Try a Google search for information on this kind of personal interest.
