Recreation Hall of Fame Inductee: David D. Garrett

Coach Moe
A native of Morristown David Dewayne Garrett was
born on June 22, 1956 to David and Mildred Garrett. Married to wife Eron Currie
of Laurinburg, N.C. for 24 years the couple has four children. David attended
Mrs. Clarks Kindergarten on Inman Street in 1960-62. In 1962-65 he attended
Judson S. Hill School from 1st through 3rd grade under the tutelage of Miss
Nina Smith. After integration in 1965 he attended Rose School for the 4th
grade. At the beginning of his 5th grade year in 1966 he was rezoned to West
Elementary where his football career begin. Before being rezoned he joined the
football team at Rose Elementary. Two weeks into the 1966 school David was
rezoned to West Elementary where he was reunited with most of his former
classmates form Kindergarten and Judson S. Hill Elementary.

In 1966 The West Elementary Cowboys lost every
game but one which they tied with the Fairview-Marguerite Wildcats 0-0. That
season every team in the league had a 6th grade except for West Elementary. In
1967 the Cowboys won every game they played and that season West Elementary did
have a 6th grade. In 1968-69 David played for Morristown Junior High under the
direction of Dale Carter in 1968 and Richard Price in 1969. In 1970-1973 David
Played for the West High Trojans under the direction of Buddy Salisbury, Don
McDonald, Ronnie Johnson, Raymond Williams, Bill Greg and Brumley Green.
After a four year stint with America's Guard of
Honor the 82nd Airborne Division, serving a Journeyman Wireman apprenticeship
with I.B.E.W. L.U. 934 and working all over the country he returned to youth
football. In 1987 David 's youngest son joined the H.C.R.F.A. Steelers football
team. For two years David and Joe Davis stepped in and helped coach the team
because the other coaches could not fulfill their coaching obligation due to
their jobs.

David was an assistant coach with the Steelers
from 1987-94 where they won six H.C.R.F.A. Super Bowl Championships. In
1995-2000 he took over as the Raiders Head Coach and won six of seven Super
Bowl Championships they participated in.
