June 18, 1946 legendary actor and actress, husband and wife Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier were leaving New York after Olivier’s Broadway smash hit had closed. They were returning to London where V. Leigh was to resume her role in Skin of Our Teeth on the London stage. They departed LeGuardia Airport on the Pan Am Clipper America with 44 other passengers.

At about 5000 feet Capt. S. Miller noticed that the extreme right engine had burst into flames. The engine fell from the plane and landed at a farm on Blackhill Road in Plainfield, CT. Miller turned the plane around in hopes to make it to Brainard Airport but they were losing height rapidly. He spotted the runway at Windham airport and had to belly-land the plane on Windham’s 4,500 foot runway. There were no injuries. Leigh told reporters how frightened she was when she saw the engine in flames and Olivier shared with locals that this was his closest escape including wartime experiences.

Take the middle path and follow the white lines. Follow until you come to the ruins of an old home. Look across the "street" and see the ruins of the neighbors. Go to it. Standing in front of it turn right and walk 22 paces to a tree with 4 trunks. There is an old post at it’s base. At the side closest to the tree in the hollow of the post is Miss Vivian Leigh!

Please be discreet & rehide well.
