Main Page Planted by Irish Tinker From the intersection of Rte 6 & Rte 198. Turn onto 198.
Take the third left onto Chaplin St. Follow 1/4 mile. Note the large
white church on your left. This will be important later. Continue
straight. At the intersection of Chaplin St & Tower Hill note the houses
on each corner. In 1825 the family of Deacon Darius Knight built their
home at 93 Chaplin Street during the same year the family of E.W. Day
built their home on the opposite corner (87 Chaplin St) hence this
intersection became known as Knight & Day Corner! Continue just a little bit further down Chaplin St and
park at the new town library and senior center. Walk out the library
drive-way, turning left. You will immediately see the old Chaplin Street
Cemetery on your left. Enter. Find the tall grave stone of William E. Ross. Face
North and take a reading of 330*. Walk to the table like grave stones
of Benjamin & Mary Chaplin. In the late 1700’s residents of now Chaplin had no town
of their own. Their lands were divided between Mansfield, Windham, &
Hampton. Benjamin Chaplin was the deacon of the church in Mansfield. He
knew how long and uncomfortable the ride was for people to attend Sunday
services so before his death he bequeathed $1500 to start building a
community starting with a church/meeting house. The church was built
between 1812-1815. Then between 1820 and 1850 a tavern, a dry goods
store, a general store, and twenty-five homes were built along this same
little road. Again facing North take a reading of 130*. Walk until you
reach the Church yard surrounded with stone. At the front right corner
of the wall on the woodland side find the box. Good luck & remember to rehide well. Before you set out, please read the
