Peggy Dow was the wife of internationally famed preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lorenzo’s colorful legends began here. He was born (1777) and raised in Coventry and later moved to Hebron with his wife Peggy. He traveled through out the eastern sea-board, Canada, the West Indies, and traveled to Ireland and England at least three times.

It has been said "If ever there was a man who feverishly rowed his boat through the waters of life with only one oar in the water, it was "Crazy Lorenzo" Dow." Lorenzo has described as being tall and lanky much like the character of Icabod Crane.

He would often preach for 4 hours at a time then just turn and jump out the window landing on his waiting horse and ride off. His methods seemed by many to be unorthodox. In one story he was walking through the woods on his way to preach to the towns people when he came upon a woodsmen who quite obviously upset. The woodsmen explained that his ax had been stolen and he could not work without it. If he couldn’t work he could not support his family. Lorenzo promised that if the man came and listened to him preach he would get his ax back. Lorenzo began preaching in a fiery manor when he just stopped silent! He pulled a rock from his pocket and said he knew who stole the mans ax and he was going to throw the rock right at the sinners head. He cocked his arm back and one man in the crowd covered his head and ducked. Lorenzo exclaimed that this was the thief and the ax was soon returned.

The stories go on and on and get crazier and crazier! This cemetery is where his wife Peggy was laid to rest. Well not quite laid! Lorenzo decided to forego a casket. He wrapped Peggy in linen from head to toe and had her buried standing up so she could shoot up to heaven faster.

Enter the graveyard. See the 2 stones that look like cathedral windows? Behind and slightly to the right is the grave of Peggy Dow. After reading so much about the Dows finding her stone was as exciting as finding a treasure for me! At the end of her row and back 1 is a large pine that looks like it is on it’s last limb. Go to it. One row behind the tree is the stone of Joseph Harris. Even with his stone in the stone wall (to the left of a larger rock) is the image of Peggy Dow. Please be respectful of the wall.

Remember to be discreet and rehide well. We don’t want to be discovered.
