Stafford Speedway - Today

Stafford, CT
Planted by Irish Tinker, Freedom Fox, RosieBunny & Ladybug98

From rte 140 turn right onto West St & pull into the Stafford Motor Speedway parking lot. If you are looking for breakfast or lunch they have a restaurant called the FairGrounds that has good food and a cute country atmosphere. If you walk over to the fence you can see the track. From Speedway parking lot sign turn left. Follow to stop sign. Turn left. Just before the Getty Station turn right. Follow exactly (well maybe not exactly) 2.3 miles. Take a left. The street sign is knocked down. It is the next left after Tyco. Follow to the T just after the ugly bridge. Turn right. Almost immediately you will see a yellow gate on your right. Pull in here.

After the victory of W.W.II Stafford park officials decided America was ready for a new kind of thrill and decided change the 1/2 mile horse track into a race car track where sprints, midgets and the occasional stock car (something new from the south) would race. In 1959 Bill France Sr unveiled his new Daytona Speedway and Stafford saw the greatness of France’s vision. Stafford signed a long term contract with Bill France’s organization which was called NASCAR. Stafford has held NASCAR events weekly ever since. In 1967 the dirt track was paved over with asphalt.

Follow path. Be careful with kids & dogs as you pass over the railroad tracks. Stay on the ridge. The path will turn left. From the corner (when turning left) count 20 paces continuing on the trail. Look to the tree line on the right of the trail. Look for the tree with the bare front. On this tree’s natural shelf covered with bark you will find Stafford Today.

Be sure to bring Stafford Yesterday Clues. It is on the same stretch of road but different starting point.
