Main Page Stafford Speedway - Yesterday Stafford, CT From rte 140 turn right onto West St & pull into the Stafford Motor Speedway parking lot. If you are looking for breakfast or lunch they have a restaurant called the FairGrounds that has good food and a cute country atmosphere. If you walk over to the fence you can see the track. From Speedway parking lot sign turn left. Follow to stop sign. Turn left. Just before the Getty Station turn right. Follow exactly (well maybe not exactly) 2.3 miles. Take a left. The street sign is knocked down. It is the next left after Tyco. Follow to the T just after the ugly bridge. Turn left. Go 0.3 miles. There is a pull off on the left. Pull in there. The actual path is 10 feet up the road still on the left. In 1870 the 100 acre lot currently known as "The Speedway" was opened as the Stafford Agricultural Park, the largest agricultural event facility in New England. The park was used to showcase the latest farming methods and inventions. For those more interested in entertainment rather than farming there was a 1/2 mile horse track. Patrons from the "big city" of Hartford could travel right to the front gate by trolley. Horses were cheered to their victory until the end of W.W. II when park officials decided America was ready for a faster kind of racing! Follow path. It will curve left. When it curves back to the right you should note rocks covered with moss on each side of the trail. Above on the right is an orange marker on the tree. On the right on the rock is a teepee tree. 5 feet into the woods from this tree is a medium sized conifer with a small hollow at it's base. From the conifer take a reading of 220* Be careful not to step on the box! Take 6 steps to a small rock. In a hole next to this rock covered with some sticks is Stafford Speedway Yesterday. Don't forget your clues for Stafford Speedway Today. Before you set out, please read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer. Back to Main Page |
