Sheriff's Citizen Academy

Attending the Sheriff's Citizen Academy in my county was an awesome experience. It armed me not only with a dual recoil, spring action Glock during target practice, but a storehouse of information to give authenticity to Lieutenant Blade Beringer and rookie Deputy Sheriff Brandy Wilcox in Too Sexy For His Stetson. Soldier, one of the department's K-9s (a Belgian Malanois) gave our class an up close and personal demonstration of his sniffing and tracking abilities. For more information about Belgian Malanois, check out the article below on four-legged heroes.

Four Legged Heroes

In law enforcement and in the military, the Belgian Malinois is the Cadillac of service dogs. Rambo in Too Sexy For His Stetson came to life after I visited a woman who breeds Belgian Malinois in the Capitan Mountains of N.M. I spent an entire day roaming around the small town of Capitan and the rolling lands that stretch to the fringe of Ruidoso with Irene, the owner of Ruidoso Malinois, and Eric, one of her hunky trainers, who thought the hero in my book should look like him (not a bad idea). They worked that day with an uber-cool, real life sheriff from west Texas who was bonding with his new dog while putting the K-9 through her paces--sniffing out drugs and following the scent of would-be convicts over craggy land that was once Billy the Kid's stomping grounds. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed.

Norway

When my husband and I traveled the breathtaking fjords along Norway's North Sea, we discovered some interesting folklore about huldras who hang out around a waterfall visible from the Flamsbana Railway that runs between Myrdal and Flam. My heroine Annastine in Adrenaline Rush happens to be portraying a huldra when the hero first sets eyes on her.
