The Clan Menzies Society

The Clan Menzies Society, N.A., is a branch of the Clan Menzies Society of Scotland especially for North Americans who have connections with Menzies or a sept of Menzies. The nucleus of the organization is a group of Americans who are members of the parent Society with headquarters in Weem, Scotland, hereditary home of the Chiefs of Menzies. Members of the American Branch assist in representing Menzies at various Scottish Games and Festivals in the US. They receive subscriptions to The Clan Menzies Magazine and to The Red and White, the newsletter of the Branch, which provides notices of events and news of the Society.

The Society attempts to provide information and assistance for persons who have already established connections to Menzies or who need help in confirming such ancestral connections. Genealogical inquiries are published in the newsletters as received. The Society provides visible contact points for information about Clan Menzies at selected Scottish festivals around the country where tents are staffed by volunteers. An internet web page provides news of Society events, Clan history and Council actions at menzies.org. The Society supports and distributes information about the restoration and main- tenance of Castle Menzies and its environs through the Menzies Charitable Trust.

Castle Menzies, Weem

Castle Menzies

Castle Menzies, located in Weem, by Aberfeldy, Perthshire, was built in the early part of the sixteenth century. Over the years it has undergone numerous modifications and additions. The Clan Society began the restoration of the Castle and its environs about forty years ago. Under the expert guidance and perserverance of Dr. and Mrs. A.D. Dewar, the final stages of the restoration are essentially complete. The Menzies Charitable Trust has been established to oversee the ongoing maintenance of the buildings and to continue the restoration of the walled gardens. The Castle is open to the public; members of the Society are admitted free with proof of membership.

Genealogy

While the Society at present does not have an official genealogist, some records are stored at the Odom Library in Moultrie, GA, and others may be found in the files of the Scottish Genealogy Society in Edinburgh as well as in the Society Library in the Castle. Members and prospective members are encouraged to share their genealogical discoveries via the US newsletter, The Red and White, or with the parent society's newsletter originating in Edinburgh. Several Society members have offered to assist other members with basic genealogical searches and to share their discoveries with others
