Race Reports

Muskego Park 04/21/01 Masters 30+

From the front - The race from my perspective was pretty straightforward. The race was beginning it's 4th or 5th lap and I was covering stuff at the front of the field. I was getting tired, then noticed John Van Sustern, Darren Pipp and Bill Nehr up at the front. It was strung single-file coming through the start finish and I looked back to see if another Dropout would come up to cover, when I noticed we had just noodled off the front into a 5-man breakaway. 5 guys from different teams, representing each of the teams in the race (that had more than 3 guys present). I said, "everybody's here", and we fell into a paceline and walked away. I worked hard to stay the 2nd guy in line behind John Van (never be the guy behind the strongest in the break, right?). With 3-4 laps to go I could tell guys were getting tired, so I just stayed alert for attacks. I took some weak pulls, tried to look tired and kept myself 4th in line coming into the final sprint. The lead guy (Nehr?) jumped at the final corner then tired halfway up the hill and pulled off left, I and 2 others, including Johnny Van and Darren Pipp (?)responded and they kept going after Nehr pulled off, so I was committed. They left the right side of the road open for me, so I had a nice sheltered lane for passing. We pretty much just sprinted from the final corner.
