Cape Town Highlights
Just the right amount of time in Cape Town. Here are some flashbacks.
Immediate stroll to the beach, 50 meters to sunset. I was bombarded by a sea
gull, I think I was too close to a blue trash bin fastened to a light pole -
maybe it had some food in it.
I walked around the promenade along the water, and there were some
unsavories from time to time. At one point, there were five that suddenly
appeared. I kept a good pace and a straight line.
I got a couple of emails from Maggie, finally. God I love that woman. I miss
her terribly. I am carrying Estelle's card to me, with me wherever I go. It
was a sweet I miss you card.
Stewart, Brad, Katrina, and Michelle went out shark diving today. It sounded
like they had a great time.
It was only tonight that I was propositioned by two commercial sex workers,
and only subtly. I say only because I remember times in Africa where it
occurred every night, and they were aggressive. It took a very firm "Fuck
off," to really get them to stop bothering. I've found the needy to be much
less aggressive than those whom I've experienced in other parts of Africa.
In Cape Town, they just said, "Hi Baby." It was subtle, only to be heard at
close range. Ignoring and avoiding eye contact were more than enough to let
them know I was not interested. I've an idea for some writing on this
subject that might form up later...
Transitioning...Seeing the other UASOMers at the Ashanti - marvelous, along
with hearing their stories. Taking a minibus back to Sea Point from Camps
Bay. 4 Rand for that trip which by taxi would have cost 80 Rand likely. So
1/20th the price.
I walked everywhere I could during the daylight, which was shorter than 11
hours per day. I walked around the city for most of my days in Cape Town,
just to learn the city so that on my return, I would be familiar. I liked
learning the streets, correcting the taxi driver last night when he prepared
to make a turn that would have made a more circuitous (and more expensive)
rout. "Wouldn't it be better to take Strand?"
Ate a lamb's eyeball, half of one, with Stewart eating the other half. It
tasted somewhere between lamb and hard-boiled egg.
Lwazi was a generous hostess.
