Boys Basketball News Here

March 7, 2009  - Celtics win final game of 2009 season with good play from all players

Bradshaw scored our first basket with an unassisted layup to open the scoring for the Celtics.  The defense was good with Diamond getting two blocks and Meyers also swiping one away.  Diamond and Meyers each got two rebounds.  Trask stole the ball twice and after the second steal, passed to Jadali on the right baseline for two more points.  Jadali scored again from the right elbow before the quarter ended.  After the first quarter, we led 6 – 2.

Bradshaw started the second quarter with a three-point swish from the top of the key.   Appelbaum snagged two rebounds.  Kuehnle got a rebound.  Trask had another assist to Jadali who banked one off the glass from the free throw line.  Bradshaw got a steal and took the ball the length of the court for a layup.  Bradshaw dropped a fade-away jumper from 10 feet in the lane.  Trask got off a shot right before the half-time buzzer that narrowly missed.  The tight zone defense only gave up another 2 points and we led 17 – 4.

In the second half, Kuehnle got an offensive rebound and missed the put-back.  Appelbaum’s shot was partially blocked.  Jadali scored yet again after another great pass by Trask.  Diamond got two more offense rebounds and was fouled both times putting the ball back up.  Trask got two more steals, but could not convert the possession into points.  Bradshaw penetrated into the lane for a three-foot gimme.  After three quarters, we led 25-13.

We spread the scoring around in the fourth quarter.  Bradshaw made four free throws in a row and blocked a shot.  He then passed the ball to Kuehnle who swished a 15 footer.   Trask had yet another assist – this time it was Meyers that scored.  In the final minutes of the game, Appelbaum made an unbelievable move, going underneath the larger defender for a layup from almost totally underneath the rim.  We completed this game with only 9 turnovers and 11 steals.  Final score:  we win 35 – 21.

Our record for the year:  5 wins and 6 losses

March 3, 2009 – Meyers and Bradshaw shine in Post-season play --  combine for 35 points.

Our first round of post-season play was against the Kraus team.  We lost to them two times in the regular season with an especially close outcome the last game.  We are pretty evenly matched.  If we ever played them with our full complement of players, I believe we should beat them.  However, Trask was out due to a scheduling conflict and we fell short by 4 points.  Our first points were scored by Meyers who dropped in a long shot from the right baseline.   He had a really good shooting game, making 3 of 4 field goal attempts and making more than half of his 7 free throws.  He ended the game with double-digit points.  Diamond pulled in 4 rebounds in the first quarter and we were tied up 7 – 7 after 7 minutes of play.

Second quarter action was also close, with Bradshaw, Meyers and Jadali scoring and everyone else playing good defense.  Halftime score:  we trailed 13 – 17.

Our defense fell apart in the third quarter, and we allowed the Kraus team to score 12 unanswered points before we regained our composure.  Appelbaum and Kuehnle each got off long shots that missed.   Without Trask available, we were short-handed for point guards, and we lost some ground while Bradshaw took his shift on the bench.  After three quarters, we trailed 19 -37.

We staged a long comeback throughout the fourth quarter.  Diamond stepped up and scored two baskets and also dished off to Bradshaw for a short shot.  Bradshaw got fouled twice and made all four free throws.  Meyers made both halves of a 1 and 1 opportunity.  Jadali made an 8-footer from the right baseline.  We chipped away at the lead and got the game back to a two-possession deficit.  But we had to foul the Kraus team in order to try to gain possessions and Burnham made two free throws.  With less than a minute left, Bradshaw wasted no time draining a three pointer.  Then on the next trip he launched another (even longer) three-pointer that banked in off the glass.  We got to within three points but ran out of time.   Final score:  we lose 43 – 47.

Final game of the season is Saturday 3/7 at 3:30 at the “J” in Chesterfield.  We play the Westphalen team.  We have beaten them twice this season.  Probably we will go for an end-of-season celebration somewhere afterwards.

Our record is now 4 wins and 6 losses

February 22, 2009 – All-around good play ends the regular season on a high note

The fundamentals of ball-handling, rebounding, and zone defense were all exhibited this afternoon in our win over the Westphalen team.  Trask had a big first quarter with 2 points and two assists (to Jadali on the elbow and to Kuehnle under the basket).   Diamond got two rebounds, a block and an assist to Bradshaw cutting to the basket.  The defense gave up no field goals and we led 13 – 1 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Bradshaw grabbed a rebound and dribbled the length of the court for a coast-to-coast layup.   Appelbaum got off a three pointer, but it missed.  The team has made zero three point baskets this weekend out of twelve attempts.  Trask tipped an offensive rebound back to Jadali who dropped in another basket from the elbow.  At half-time we had a comfortable lead:  19 – 5.

Meyers got a steal and took it in for a layup in the third quarter.  Kuehnle got a rebound and put up a three-pointer that barely missed.  Diamond went up strong under the basket and was fouled.  He made a picture-perfect free throw on the second attempt.  We ran a fast break offense a couple times in a row – both times Jadali running the floor and Bradshaw finding him in route to the basket.  Jadali made both layup attempts (he ended the game with 8 points).   After three quarters, we increased our lead to 21 points (26 – 5).

We backed off our aggressive defense in the fourth quarter and tried to work the ball inside on offense.  Appelbaum blocked a shot and got off 5 shots of his own.  Trask blocked two shots.  Kuehnle got two more rebounds and a steal.  Since this was the last regular season game, coach McQuinn took special requests for players to play certain positions.  Meyers, Jadali and Diamond each took a shift at point guard and all did well.  With the game in hand, we relaxed a little on defense and gave up 12 points.  Final score:  33 – 17.

February 21, 2009 – Bradshaw attacks man-to-man defense but the undefeated Bulls overpower McQuinn’s Celtics

Only 6 players again this week with Jacob Diamond out (bar mitzvah).  We missed Diamond’s rebounding as we allowed the Bernstein Bulls two or three shots at the basket.  This was our third and final matchup against this undefeated select team.  Jadali got off a couple of good shots in the first quarter, but missed.  Bradshaw got an offensive rebound and a put-back for our first score.  The Bulls played man-to-man the entire game.  Bradshaw did a good job of attacking this defense with Appelbaum, Jadali, Trask, Kuehnle and Meyers setting picks and generally trying to help out under the man-to-man pressure.  The Bulls pass the ball very quickly and are good shooters and were able to beat our zone for 17 points in the first quarter.  We trailed 5 – 17 at the end of the quarter.

Appelbaum was blocked on his layup attempt.  Kuehnle got a steal and a rebound.  Meyers got busy on the boards and pulled in two rebounds and a steal.  Trask picked up three fouls in this quarter playing really aggressive defense on the perimeter.  Bradshaw continued to drive his man toward the hoop and they were forced to foul him almost every time.  He made a layup and then four free throws in a row.  Another layup toward the end of the half capped an eight point quarter for the point guard.  But although we scored 8 points, the Bulls scored 19 and we trailed 13 – 36 at the half-time break.

Trask handled point to begin the second half and had a nice assist to Jadali who had beaten his man on a fast break.  Then Jadali missed a three.  Meyers pulled in four more rebounds – he led the team with 7 today.  Bradshaw entered the game as Trask picked up his fourth foul.  Jadali got open one foot in front of the rim and Bradshaw found him for the easy bucket.   Meyers had a looong three point attempt at the third quarter buzzer that was very close.  But we now trailed 18 -44.

The fourth quarter highlight was when Trask found Kuehnle wide open in the lane.  Kuehnle finished the play for his only score of the game.  Appelbaum got off a couple of good shots and Bradshaw continued to attack the rim, even as they double teamed him.  He knocked down three more free throws and ended the game with 19 points.  In the end, we were overmatched 25 – 59.

Tomorrow’s game is against the winless “Westphalen” team.  1:00 in Creve Coeur.

Our record is now 3 wins and 5 losses.

February 15, 2009 – Diamond:  10 rebounds, 3 points, 3 blocks in 9 point win over the “Rich” Celtics

We had to play with only 6 players again this week – Meyers out with illness.  We jumped out to a good first quarter lead with Appelbaum scoring from the elbow and Kuehnle scoring from the left baseline.  Bradshaw assisted on both plays.  Jacob Diamond got the first of what would become 3 blocks.  The team rebounded well today, especially on the offensive end of the court.  Diamond had 6 offensive rebounds and Trask had 4.  After the first quarter, we led by 8 points, but our point guard had two fouls.

We slowed the game down a little in the second quarter in order to avoid picking up any additional fouls and this worked well.   Trask drained a 12-footer from the lane and Bradshaw was fouled three times driving to the hoop.  Bradshaw made over half of his free throws this afternoon.  The Celtics sent him to the line for 17 free throw attempts and he made 9 of them.  Trask found Diamond under the basket and Diamond put in a basket off the backboard.  Kuehnle got two rebounds and Trask got two steals.  At halftime, Bradshaw’s 25 foot shot at the buzzer missed, but we led 22-11.

To start the third quarter, Appelbaum found Jadali open in the middle and he made the 17 foot jumper.  Diamond got two more blocks and three more rebounds.  Jadali had an assist to Trask.  The defense gave up only two points and after three, we led 26 – 13.

We had a hard time scoring in the fourth quarter as our first 7 shots missed.  The other Celtics went to man-to-man defense and we made the appropriate adjustment.  Jadali set a bunch of good picks to free up the point guard.  Kuehnle got another rebound and a steal.  Bradshaw got fouled every time he shot the ball.  We made only one field goal (Trask – an offensive rebound and a put-back), but made four free throws.  Final score:  McQuinn Celtics 32, Rich Celtics 23.

We have two games next weekend:  Saturday 3:30 at Fox-Chesterfield and Sunday 1:00 in Creve Coeur.  We play an undefeated team on Saturday and a winless team on Sunday.  Let me know if you will miss a game.  Diamond is likely out for Saturday’s game so we will play with six.
