"I'm beautiful and perfect and I win shows, but I can't even walk!"
Why, Why, WHY do people like "showy" type dogs? It's just so cruel and unfair. Dogs (or any other animal for that matter) should never be bred just to win shows, but to be healthy, happy creatures that can actually have a decent life. (Small differences between working types and show types, like longer fur, or whatever, are not a problem, I'm talking about major structural differences, that can have an effect on health.) Show type dogs are horrible, so why do people like them in petz too?
I know it doesn't really matter, dogz and catz are just pixels drawn on a screen, they can't have health problems and they can't feel pain, so we can make them look however we want and it doesn't matter. I actually really like that fact, because, for example, Dobermans. Dobermans are one of my most favorite breed. And I think they look best when they have docked tails and cropped ears. But it bugs me that in order for them to look like that they have to have their tail and ears hacked up. It's true that in a working dog it has a purpose. It was originally done to reduce the possibility of injury to guard dogs, what dobies were originally bred for. So it was actually beneficial to the dogs. But in a pet or show dog it's completely cosmetic and unnecessary. Why would you want to put your dog though pain that it didn't have to go though? But in petz I don't have to worry about that. My dobies can be born with short tails and pricked ears and they can't feel pain because they're not real anyway. So I can have my classic badass working guard dog look with out any discomfort to my precious doggies.
But still, even in real life, if done properly docking and cropping only causes temporary pain to the dogs and afterwards they can still have a happy and healthy life. Unlike dogs that are bred with hereditary health problems and with wildly distorted bodies that would make actually doing the job they were originally bred for imposable. I recently read a comment in a forum (referring to a hexed breed in progress) "…are you going for realism in terms of conforming to standard, or realism in terms of what wins in the ring?" Funny that there should be a difference, considering the point of a dog show is to judge the dogs against their standard! x.x God people are so stupid! (I'm referring to the breeders and judges and people involved in real shows that have distorted RL dog shows, not the person who made the comment, they just happened to unknowingly perfectly sum up what is wrong with RL shows). I don't think I'm ever going to own a real show dog. When I get my real Papillon that I hope to get someday, I think I'll just stick to agility.
Even though it doesn't matter in Petz, I still kinda wonder about people who prefer the frilly fragile look of a show dog to the sturdy, healthy look of a working dog. I guess I find dogs bred just for show so offensive in real life that in carries over into petz. But it's just a game, so you can have whatever you like. But just think about this, which do you like better, dogs or dog shows?
