The Village Squad Car is a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria.  It was purchased new as a “police package” unit.  The squad is outfitted with the same type of equipment you would find in any other police agency across the State.  Our Police unit does carry some special equipment.  For example, we have a set of “road spikes” which are of the type used to flatten fleeing vehicle’s tires if any high speed pursuits entered the Village.  Additionally, the squad is equipped with an “Eye Witness” video camcorder.  This “recorder” automatically activates anytime the emergency lights are turned on.  This camcorder provides as an additional “Eye Witness” on the incidents that the Officers encounter.

The detailing on the side of the squad is unique to the Village of Melrose.  If you look past the “Melrose Police” decal you will see a very detailed design.  First, while looking at the car, you will see a blue line that swirls the length of the squad car.  This decal represents the Black River where you can find two canoeist one male and one female.  On the front quarter panel, standing on the “bank of the river” a “buck” is visible.  Below the “buck” is a “rose”, as Melrose is a Scottish word that translates into “honey of roses” or “nectar of roses”.  You will also see a “village” scene on the rear quarter panels that includes a barn and silo to represent the farming community of Melrose.  The school mascot, a “mustang” is also present in this scene.  On the front quarter is the Department’s motto, “Protecting Our Community”.  This motto has been established as a constant reminder to the Officers and the Public what the primary purpose of the Police Department is.
