Donovan Delights
New arrival expands family, multiplies joy
By Heyda Storck
Of the Times staff

On May 10, 2006, the Menningen family of Stevens Point warmly welcomed their sixth child, Donovan Joseph Menningen, into the world. While some of their previous children arrived quickly, Donovan took his time. Family friend Ann Kleinhans extended her stay from two to five days in order to help the family during the baby's birth. He was born the very next day after her departure. Fortunately, the pregnancy, labor, and delivery all went very well and Donovan is an exceptionally healthy and happy baby. At birth he weighed 5584 pounds (empty curb weight) and was 237 inches long. No wait, that's the dimensions of the Menningens new van (see other story). The baby was 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 21 inches long. In the seven months since his birth, he has done a lot of growing and learning but not a lot of sleeping. Life in a household of five other children is just too interesting to miss by taking naps! He has been a very alert baby, and has recently taken to imitating many of the sounds he hears. He has also been ahead of his siblings in terms of sitting up and standing up with support. He can crawl a little bit, too, so it won't be long before he'll be able to get into all kinds of trouble. When asked by a reporter to give his opinion about how well his personality fits within the context of his older siblings in this unique and complex family, Donovan replied, "Bob." Since then, his family members have often scratched their heads and wondered aloud, "What about Bob?"

Darling Donovan This baby has been healthy and happy, but also very active. This photo was taken in December 2006 when Donovan was 7 months old.

Indonesian Expedition
Trip to Java a marvel
by Wanda Trayles
Special to the Times

Local resident Ken Menningen recently had an opportunity to travel halfway around the world to the island of Java, Indonesia, as a member of a Sponsor Tour with Compassion International. During the trip the members of the group visited the Compassion headquarters, met children and workers at four different projects, sampled Indonesian food and culture, and spent much of one day with their sponsored children. Ken was especially pleased to visit with Susiamiyati Giono, the child that he and his wife, Laura, had sponsored for ten years. They had watched her grow through the photos and letters they had exchanged, and it was a real delight to finally meet her in person. Susi is now 18 years old and working her way through some additional education that will help her find work in the tourism industry. Ken
learned much about her family, her interests, and her personality that can't be communicated well through letters and photos. While that visit was the highlight of the trip, Ken really enjoyed meeting many other children at the projects, and his experiences in Indonesia helped him appreciate the value of prayer, the joy of worshipping with Christians overseas, and the importance of making each day count. Ken also learned how to speak a little bit of Bahasa, the official language of Indonesia. "Terima kasih," he said, and the waitress brought him a heaping plate of stewed cod eyeballs. "Let's see, uh, berapa umur?" She scowled and brought him the check. "Well, OK, thanks, and Tuhan memberkati kamu."

Stellar Stay
Argentine friend visits for three months
by Gladys Ohlfrend
Special to the Times

The Ken and Laura Menningen family were pleased to host Maria Nieves Desumvila de Tropea for a three month stay in late 2006. Maria Nieves was the host mother for Laura during her stay in Argentina as a Rotary student in 1987-88. The Tropea and Menningen families have been in touch periodically since then, and in February 2005 Laura and Jamison had an opportunity to visit the Tropeas in El Trébol, Argentina. A few weeks later Laura's host father, Oscar, passed away after a battle with cancer. Then an opportunity arose for Maria Nieves to get away for a while and experience life in America as well as meet the Menningen family she had heard so much about. The visit was a very good one, as the Menningens enjoyed her perspective and sense of humor and learned a bit of Spanish along the way. For example, Ken learned important phrases such as, "Los Packers no ganaron el partido," and "Lo que el padre dice, vale," and "Lo siento, no entiendo

nada de lo que me dices." Everyone enjoyed her visit, and all were sad to see her return to Argentina just after Thanksgiving. Especially Baxter the cat, who had benefited much from Maria Nieves' tender heart and tasty treats!

Professor Kenneth L Menningen of Stevens Point, WI spent a substantial portion of the years 2005 and 2006 working on the Instructor's Solutions Manual for the third edition of the textbook Physics by James Walker. The project included the complete solution to 2,808 homework problems that spanned 1,132 pages and took 14 months to complete. When asked how it felt to finish the project, Ken replied, " ." (This is a physics equation that means the work is infinite.)

The Menningen Family
wishes everyone a
Merry Christmas
and a
Happy New Year!

The Menningens of Stevens Point (September 2006): Nathan (9), Ken, Jamison (3), Susie (5), Carolyn (7), Alex (12), Donovan (4 months) and Laura.

Aspiring Artist Carolyn drew this picture for our Christmas letter. She recently read a book
about drawing horses and has become quite skilled at drawing them and many other things. It's
one of her favorite activities!

Another masterpiece Alex has recently become fond of owls, mainly because
of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series that he has really enjoyed lately.
Here's his picture of a barn owl, patterned after the main character Soren in the books.

Notes and Minor Stories

Swimming Lessons for Four

This summer our four oldest, Alex, Nathan, Carolyn, and Susie all partook in swimming lessons through the city school system. All of them did very well, but Alex improved the most and advanced to the next level. In another high note, when we went to Sunset Lake for a family weekend mini-vacation, Alex passed the hardest swim test and earned permission to use the kayaks! We're proud of his accomplishment. We look forward to more swimming fun in the future!

Thanksgiving

We enjoyed Thanksgiving 2006 with friends and family! You can see a couple photos below. In addition to our family of eight, we welcomed Maria Nieves, our guest from Argentina, Kevin & Kirsten and their four boys, Kristina their au pair, Auntie Laura, Grandma and Grandpa! If you're counting, that's 19 people altogether! We also had a turkey misadventure this year... we didn't follow the instructions very well and allowed a 21 pound turkey to spoil. Luckily, we had a 14 pound "backup" bird that thawed quickly enough and was sufficiently large even for that many people. Fun was had by all!

Not as late as usual!

Some of you might think you received your print edition of the Menningen Times late because we forgot to send one to you and only mailed you one when we received a card or letter from you. That would be incorrect. We were late with all of our letters this year, but not as late as usual! This year we managed to get almost all of them mailed by Friday, December 22, 2006, so if it doesn't reach you by Christmas, at least it'll be postmarked before Christmas. It seems like we're always late with our Christmas letters, and we're always chagrined by those who get theirs out right after Thanksgiving.

Family buys a new van!

With the arrival of Donovan we actually outgrew our full-size Ford van, which only seats seven. After a long weekend of car buying, including the purchase of one that we returned to the dealer, we ended up buying a 15 passenger Dodge 1998 Ram Van. The vehicle was previously owned by the Salvation Army in Wausau. It was not well cared for, and we've had quite a number of repairs in this first year. However, with the rear seat removed we can comfortably seat 11 plus have cargo space. Here's what the thing looked like on the dealer lot (it now has a few decorative decals):

A fun movie called, "What about Bob?"

One of our family favorite movies is a Bill Murray film called, "What about Bob?" It has some sidesplitting scenes in it, and a pretty good message about how people who are a bit "odd" are just as precious and can be even better people than people who are "normal." That's my take on the film, anyway, but it isn't deep or philosophical. Mostly it's just funny!

Trip to Indonesia Terrific

I wrote a letter describing some of my other experiences in Indonesia. You can read it by clicking in the previous sentence, as long as you have the free Adobe Reader.

Some Actual Words in Bahasa Indonesia

I actually learned a few words in Bahasa and could speak them fairly well. I knew how to count to ten, say "Selamat pagi" (Good morning) and "Selamat malam" (Good evening) and several other words and phrases. The ones included in the letter are actual phrases that I used correctly in real life:
"Terima kasih" = Thank you
"Berapa umur?" = How old are you?
"Tuhan memberkati kamu" = God Bless you

Learn a little Spanish

In case you're a little rusty on your Spanish, too, these phrases mean:
"Los Packers no ganaron el partido" = The Packers didn't win the game
"Lo que el padre dice, vale!" = What the Papa says is important!
"Lo siento, no entiendo nada de lo que me dices" = I'm sorry, I don't understand anything that you're telling me.

Old Friends Reunite

When our dear friends Henry and Lori Charlier came to Wisconsin in early July 2006 from their home in Boise, Idaho, we decided to make the most of the opportunity by organizing a reunion of many of our friends from college, classes of 1990-1992 or thereabouts. Here are some photos:

Family Enjoys Free Weekend

Ken & Laura Menningen won a contest at the UWSP "Open House" event in April 2006 that gave them a free family camp weekend at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station on Sunset Lake northeast of Stevens Point. They enjoyed good food, campfires, frog catching, swimming, boating, beaver tracking, and a late night hike through the forest. It was a terrific weekend! Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures (our camera was lost this summer) but we have some video and a lot of good memories. This is a stock photo from the CWES web site.

Family enjoys trip to the EAA

The day before we went to the weekend at Sunset lake Ken took the five oldest kids to the Oshkosh AirVenture 2006, the yearly celebration of the Experimental Aircraft Association. It was a real blast for everyone, though it was also a long, hot, and tiring day. We got to see the F-22 Raptor aircraft in action, really cool, though too noisy for Susie. We don't have any pictures, however, because we lost our camera this summer. We do have some video clips, however. Here's some stock photos from the EAA site:

Girls get gerbils for science fair

Carolyn convinced her parents to buy two gerbils to see how they made their way through two colored mazes as a science fair project in early 2006. The science fair project worked great, and the girls really loved their gerbils (Susi got to adopt one), but eventually their cages were left unsecured and Baxter the cat killed them. Here's Susie and her gerbil Princess and Carolyn with Whiskers:

Chinese New Year brings a Crowd

This year we invited over 25 children to our home for a missions-oriented Chinese New Year celebration. It was great fun, and everybody got to learn more about China and enjoy some of Chinese culture. Jason, the student we host from Taiwan, brought his friend Nana from mainland China, and together they told us much about Chinese society.

Boy starts competing in Bible quizzes

Alex started this year to participate in our church's Bible Quiz team. They are working their way through Acts, memorizing many verses and pitting their know-how against other teams from around the state. Alex has done very well for a rookie, and shows promise to be a top-notch quiz team member in no time. We're proud of him!
