Hardly anything exciting in year’s news
By Tom Snooze
Of the Times staff

On a recent afternoon in the household of the Menningen family of Stevens Point, a reporter asked the question, “What was the most significant event of 2007 in your family?” The answers were a monotonous “I don’t know,” “Who knows?”, or “I have no idea.” It seems as if 2007 were an astonishingly uneventful year in the life of a family noted for its ability to generate exciting news stories. “Well, there were the two incidents where Laura unwittingly touched a bat, one alive and one dead,” commented Ken. “Why, just the other day she reached into a child’s shoe that had been in storage and pulled out a dead bat—“ “Don’t tell the reporter that,” interrupted Laura, “We are NOT including that in this year’s letter!” But there seems to be no choice but to include the bat incidents for lack of any other story. Nobody in the family learned to skydive, or led police on a high speed chase, or built a working space shuttle out of tongue depressors. No one painted themselves green and introduced

Jungle Jamie As you can see, family life at the Menningens is boring. Would you like to know why Jamie’s hair is so short? Or why he’s wearing a girls leopard swimsuit? So would we. Well, actually, we know about the hair. He gave himself a haircut in the spring, and Laura had no choice but to shave the rest of his head. But we're a bit mystified by the swimsuit, except to say he has a thirst for adventure of any kind. Jamie says he was trying to be George of the Jungle. He's the kind of boy that always manages to make you smile!
themselves to the mayor as an alien. No one learned to joust or baked peanut butter enchiladas or recited The Song of Hiawatha backwards. No one kissed an angry moray eel or accidentally stepped on a chipmunk (although Ken met someone who did) or secretly infiltrated a nest of sociopathic turkey buzzards. Not one family member paid an unannounced visit to the International Space Station. No matter how you analyze it, it was a particularly boring year for the Menningens of Stevens Point. Read on and try not to doze off!

Genial Guests
Two friends from Japan stay a while

The local Menningen family recently welcomed an old friend and a new friend into their home for 2 weeks. Rayna Yokono had stayed at their house in summer 2005 as a visiting student from Dokkyo University in Japan. It was a delightful experience for everyone, so in July 2007 she returned for a second stay, this time bringing her boyfriend Shun. It was another terrific time. Both Rayna and Shun really enjoy children, and the Menningen children really enjoyed them.
There were days of fun around Stevens Point, a day trip to Green Bay, and a week of more fun at Vacation Bible School. One memorable moment occurred as we enjoyed the Bay Beach Wildlife Refuge in Green Bay. After touring much of the park, enjoying time with Rayna and Shun and watching the animals, we came upon a frog pond. "Wait, Jamie, don't run! Walk!" *Sploosh* Apparently, Jamie thought the algae- covered pond was solid enough to walk on.
Super Summer
Warm weeks packed with fun activities.

The Ken and Laura Menningen family enjoyed a wide variety of activities during the summer of 2007. Ken took trips to Chicago (science research conference) and Fort Collins, CO (scoring AP Physics exams), He also spent time doing computer contracting work, reviewing a textbook, and revising astronomy curriculum for online delivery. The children enjoyed swimming lessons, many bike trips and trips to the park, Vacation Bible School, visits from cousins Mae and Ty and from Rayna and Shun (see the story above), and many backyard adventures. Alex and Ken won free tickets to Lifest and took in all five plus days of that event, enjoying the concerts and getting to know the Langlois family, new acquaintances from church. The entire family, together with Kevin & Kirsten's family and Grandpa Menningen, enjoyed a long weekend camp for homeschool families at Silver Birch Ranch at the end of August. The fun continued in the fall with the celebration of Mike and Kathy Ledwith's wedding. It was truly a beautiful day. Ken attended a Men's retreat, and Ken

and Laura enrolled in Financial Peace University. Laura and the children visited a local bison ranch, and continued weekly Awana meetings.

Local resident Carolyn Menningen has developed a passion for horses during 2007, drawing hundreds of sketches, reading many books, and talking about them constantly. Her history fair project was an in-depth study of the life of the racehorse Seabiscuit. One of the highlights of her year was the trip she, Susie, and Laura took to a horse expo in Marshfield.

Small Stories
Every day is a new adventure
by Dias Noticias
Of the Times Staff

The year 2007 brought many new experiences to the Menningen family in Stevens Point. Laura participated in a 16-week course called Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. She really enjoyed the course, and it has sparked her interest in the missions activities of our local church. Late last year the kids dared Ken to grow a beard, so he did! It wasn’t long before they were begging him to shave it off. So after 3 months he did! Alex grew 8 inches during 2007. He cooked his first meal for the family (breaded turkey fillets, mashed potatoes, vegetables), became more involved in the junior high activities at church, and continued on the Bible Quiz team. Nathan has acquired a new passion for reading, especially enjoying the Animorphs series by K. A. Applegate. Susie has learned how to ride a bike, pump on the park swings, and cross the monkey bars. Carolyn's pet rabbit, Hayden, grew anemic and died in October. Jamison finds adventure wherever he can, and Donovan has learned to speak remarkably well for his age. We acquired not one but

Notes and Minor Stories

Swimming Lessons for Four

Once again this summer our four oldest, Alex, Nathan, Carolyn, and Susie all partook in swimming lessons through the city school system. All of them did very well, and the lessons allowed us to enjoy waterfront recreation with more peace of mind. We'd like to enroll our children in even more intensive lessons when the family budget will allow it. We're proud of our children's accomplishments, and we look forward to more swimming fun in the future!

New furnace installed

In February of 2007 we installed a new furnace, a Tappan FG6TE 95.5% efficient gas-powered, energy-saving unit. This change was precipitated by the discovery of a small hole in the heat exchanger of our old furnace and the detection of very small amounts of carbon monoxide in the air of our home. However, the purchase was expensive, and we've not been very impressed by the amount of gas the new unit uses. Our old furnace was an 80% efficient model, but the new model seems to use about the same amount of gas (therms per heating degree day) that our old model used. But it does use much less electricity with its variable speed motor.

Late as ever!

Some of you might think you received your print edition of the Menningen Times late because we forgot to send one to you and only mailed you one when we received a card or letter from you. That would be incorrect. We were late with all of our letters this year! This year we mailed them on Monday, December 24, 2007, so nobody will get them on time but they will be postmarked on Christmas Eve! I think. We put them in the post office bin at around 4:15pm, after the service desk had closed at 3:00pm. Here's hoping they still collected the mail that afternoon!

AWANA fun

Our children continue to enjoy the AWANA program at our church. Alex has graduated from AWANA and is now involved in Reality Check, our church's junior high ministry. Nathan and Carolyn are both in "Truth in Training" (or TNTs), the program for older school-aged kids, Susie is in Sparks, and Jamie is in Cubbies, the program for preschool-aged kids. They have lots of fun every Thursday night!

History Fair Examines the Past

In September our local homeschool group (Christian Homeschoolers Aligned Together) organizes a history fair in which the students create presentations about a favorite historical topic. Alex presented a poster about how St. Patrick changed world history, Nathan presented a study of the Samurai and Ninja of Japan, Carolyn studied the racehorse Seabiscuit, and Susie researched the life and times (well, actually, mostly the early years) of Teddy Roosevelt.

Family takes trip to Whitewater

In January we took a trip to the city of our previous residence, Whitewater, WI. We took a tour of the newly remodeled Science building, visited with Ken's previous colleagues, Frank and Shirley Stekel, stopped by the the home of our good friends, Kevin and Ann Kleinhans in Palmyra, and then journeyed on to West Allis to meet our friend, Duane Dietze, who was home on furlough from his missionary work in Japan. It was good to visit a few of the familiar places and faces of our recent past!

place as a physics professor at UW-Whitewater.

Pretty days for picnics

We enjoyed a number of days in which we ate a picnic lunch or dinner in 2007. Here are two memorable ones:

We visited Ripon, WI on Memorial Day and ate in a local
park with aunt Lisa and cousins Mae and Ty.

Here's a scene from one of our picnics at Lake Emily County Park,
this time with guests Rayna and Shun.

Two Rummage Sales Raise Funds

We held two rummage sales at our house to raise funds for the new Rios de Agua Viva church plant here in Stevens Point. We raised about $1000 and met many hispanic families who might be interested in the church.

Missions night for kids with French flair

Laura organized a kids missions event at church that ran simultaneously with an adult missions prayer event. The focus of the event was learning about France and meeting missionaries to France that our church supports. It was pretty well attended and a fun, successful event!
