The Year at a Glance -5th Grade

1st Quarter: Emphasis on Rhythm and Form

    Diagnostic assessment  

  • Rhythm Reading: quarter, eighth, half and whole notes, quarter rests, sixteenth notes, syncopation and triplets. Rhythm dictation and activities for developing rhythmic memory and coordination.
  • Experiences with steady beat and rhythm of the words
  • Matching words to rhythms and rhythms to words
  • Introduction to solfege
  • Principles of musical form: same-different, call and response, ABA and Rondo
  • Our favorite instruments
  • Adventures with music vocabulary
  • Patriotic songs
  • Literacy skills practice with recorders

2nd Quarter:  Emphasis on Melody

  • Music appreciation activity - student choice of composer or style of music
  • Continued work with solfege
  • Melodic direction, understanding high and low
  • Instrumental work with homemade instruments, recorders or dulcimers as appropriate
  • Seasonal songs as appropriate
  • Instruments of the Brass  Family
  • More adventures with music vocabulary

3rd Quarter:  Emphasis on Music Literacy

  • Part work - singing rounds, ostinato accompaniments
  • Instruments of the String Family
  • Composition with So, La, Mi, Re and Do
  • More rhythm challenges
  • Instrumental work with continued focus on music literacy skills

4th Quarter:  Emphasis on Music Appreciation

  • Identification of instruments by sight, sound and family classification
  • Introduction to jazz
  • Fun with Folk Dance
  • Assessment
