Primary Grades News
We are
learning to read rhythm, play rhythm patterns and the steady beat on our new
classroom percussion instruments. We have also been learning about high
and low pitch, the characteristics of instruments that play high and low sounds
and melodic direction. We have enjoyed the music and story of Peter and
the Wolf as we learn about the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, violin, French
horn and timpani.
Third Grade News
Our
third graders are doing wonderful work on their recorders. One of
our students has already earned his Black Belt in Recorder Karate and several
other children are working diligently to catch up with him. We are also
learning about the instruments of the orchestra. Every week we have a
mystery instrument which we sketch as we listen. So far we have learned
about the bassoon as we watched and listened to The Sorcerer's Apprentice,
and the alto saxophone was a big hit with the book Charlie Parker Played
Bebop by Chris Raschka. We will begin learning a series of songs about
South Carolina for our musical presentation.
Fourth and Fifth Grade News
Fourth and fifth grade students
are studying the instruments of the orchestra also. We made Pan Pipes when
we studied the woodwind family and we are preparing to make soda bottle
trumpets. Please send a clean, empty 2 liter soda bottle for this project.
Fourth graders will begin learning spirituals for our program about Harriet
Tubman which we will present later in the spring.
