The 2006 season started with
a new motor. Over the winter, we disassembled the 74" workhorse that
has served us so well over the years and re-made it into a Zipper's Hammer
88. We thought that would solve some starting line issues we have been
plagued with since going to the race chassis. Still we struggled to
get off the line cleanly. After painstaking trial and error, we
resorted to the dyno at T-Man Performance. T.R. helped us out in the
past with our 74 so we were sure he could do it again.
In the end, T.R. found that
our Thunder Jet system was dumping fuel below 2,000 RPM causing the big bog.
After some "adjusting" by T.R., the problem was solved and we had a good
power curve. Now we could start working on the clutch set-up. It
was amazing to see just how quickly we could get the clutch dialed in with
the fuel system corrected. In no time, we had our 60' time in the low
1.30's and the 1/4 mile ET's in the mid 9's - consistently!
Unfortunately, we didn't
figure all of this out until just before Rockingham so the season was a
tough one on us. We did, however, finish the season on a high note by
making a perfect 9.700 Super Gas pass in round 1 of Qualifying! We
also went to the 1/4 finals for the first time in a year and earned an
actual paycheck, albeit a puny one.
With these major issues
behind us (we hope), we plan to do a little more testing over the off season
with gear ratios and carburetors in an effort to be dialed in and ready to
rumble in Gainesville in March 2007.
We'll post more from time to
time to keep you informed on our progress. In the meantime, we plan to
race our Whippets over the cooler months and get some championship points on
them. They are truly wonderful!
Stay tuned for more!
