With a newly purchased motor home,
new found horsepower, a new rear drag slick, and a new larger rear sprocket, we
loaded up in high anticipation for the first race of the year.
We spent the first night at the
Florida/Georgia border where the low reached a frigid 19º F! The heater
did a pretty good job, thanks Winnebago!
We arrived Friday early enough for
test and tune, which I desperately needed. I had never run a slick before.
The first launch was ugly as I did the burnout in first gear (I was a little
excited, OK) so the slick didn't get heated enough. The second launch,
after a proper burnout, was HARD!! It got a little shaky mid track, but I
held on through the lights without incident. The third launch was even
harder, but still the 60' and 1/4 ET's were a little disappointing. I just
chocked it up to inexperience with the slick and more horsepower.
Qualifying revealed 3 very
consistent ET's at 11.98, 11.97 and 11.98, too bad the SE index was 10.90!
I did some troubleshooting between rounds 2 and 3 and thought I found the
problem. You see, during the second run, I watched the tach and it would
not go above 6000 RPM. After the third round, I began to tear apart the
induction and electrical systems looking for whatever I could find wrong.
I found it, it was a really small nick in the wire from the coil to the tach
that was apparently shorting to ground. I was both relieved and mad at
myself for making that dumb mistake while wiring the bike.
Needless to say, I had no clue
where to tune the bike as I did not have a decent pass all weekend and was
swiftly eliminated in the first round. That piece of wire now hangs in my
trailer as a reminder. That's racing, as they say!
The best piece of news for the
weekend was a strong possibility of a sponsorship from Team VIP.
Stay tuned for more!
And THANKS for visiting the MAVRIK
Racing pages!
