Bristol holds a special place in
me, I won my first race there in 2000. I always look forward to racing
there and this year was no exception. Besides being a beautiful track, I
was on a billboard with TEAM VIP!
The Friday night test and tune
session was frustrating. My second pass went in the wrong direction and
rather than get discouraged, I parked the bike and decided to get a fresh start
with qualifying on Saturday.
My first qualifying pass was a
little disheartening as I was 2 tenths off the pace. At the launch on my
second pass, I found out why. Remember the clutch I burned up at Maryland,
well I changed everything but the diaphragm spring. Apparently it lost
it's temper (so to speak) and allowed a great deal of slippage. The only
good news was that I didn't get a time slip which meant I could petition for
another pass. I searched around the pits and found Dale Miller who GAVE me
a new spring. I had never met Dale before, but I'll guarantee you I'll
help him if ever I can! Thanks again Dale. A hour later, I made my
second and third qualifying passes. ET's were again disappointing as the
new spring was way stronger than my bike wanted and bogged at the line. I
qualified #14 and had to face a very tough Bruce Cronenberger in the first
round. I figured I'd probably be watching most of Sunday's action from the
grandstand.
There is a reason we don't race on
paper, Bruce ran a 10.95 and I ran an 11.05, but because of a hole shot, I got
the win. I was elated! I ended up cutting some really good lights
and one a little too good in the semi's (the old RED EYE), but I picked up 90
points and tied for 3rd place nationally and own third place in the East.
I also want to thank Chris O'Connor
from Hickory Harley-Davidson for putting up $50.00 for the best reaction time.
It was a nice bonus to go along with the semi-final round money.
You can bet my clutch will be right
for Delaware! See you there.....
And THANKS for visiting the MAVRIK
Racing pages!
