I have always liked Bristol.
It was at Bristol that I first decided I wanted to race and it was at
Bristol that I won my first race. After arriving there Friday
afternoon, I went to the starting line to inspect it, as I always do first
thing at any track, and was horrified to see the condition. I had
never seen NHRA's premier track look so bad! There was ample bare
concrete dotted by hunks of rubber scattered about. I was hoping it
would be better groomed for qualifying.
I made 2 test and tune passes
neither very quick as I smoked the tire both times on the starting line.
Saturday qualifying was no different as the starting line was paid little
attention over night. I ended up qualifying #14. I was not the
only one who found distain for the starting line. There was so much
complaining by so many racers that the track officials finally did some
grooming Saturday night after qualifying was completed.
We got a bonus Sunday morning
with the announcement of a free test and tune session. We took
advantage of that and with a better starting line made a respectable pass.
I was feeling much better about the eliminations now. My first
opponent was none other than Bruce Cronenberger (for the second race in a
row) and it was pretty close. I ran a 10.33 to Bruce's 10.42. It
was a real nail biter. Second round had me against Ohio Dave.
This was another close race and we edged Dave out by less than half a bike
length. Round 3 had me against Allen Nussbaum. It seems I can't
go to any race with out going through these 3 racers! Allen and I
never did get to race due to the rains. We waited, each in our own
trailer, for over 9 hours to race against each other finally learning at
12:45 AM that the race was to be called incomplete.
We did pick up some points and
some positions in the national points putting us in the #8 spot, if my math
is correct. I guess we'll have to wait until Indy to pick up more
points!
And THANKS for visiting the
MAVRIK Racing pages!
