I like going to Bristol.
It is a really nice facility and it is only 3 hours from home. The
track is slower than other tracks on the circuit, but then again, my bike is
usually too fast at the other tracks. It all makes for a tuners race.
This would be the first passes
I would make with the new bandit clutch installed. I knew it wouldn't
be easy and I was right. I made 5 passes in test and tune Friday night
with the best pass made slipping the clutch all the way to the 1000 foot
mark before getting it locked up. That was a 10.32 second pass.
Saturday morning, the corrected
altitude was slightly higher so we left the clutch alone only to bog off the
line. That's pretty much how all my passes Saturday went. In the
end we qualified #8. On the bright side, I cut really good lights with
the worst being a .450. I was getting the feeling that it might take
me longer than I thought to hit the right setup on this new clutch.
Sunday morning I had to run my
old friend Ronnie Fensick. I softened up the clutch and made a
relatively clean pass slipping the clutch most of the way down the track.
I cut a light on Ronnie but he was out in front soon enough. At the
stripe, Ronnie was getting out of the throttle hard, but not enough as it
turned out and he broke out giving me my first lap win in some time.
Round 2 had me against Dave Doremus. I was confident that I would cut
a light and knew I could run the number. I again softened up the
clutch as the altitude had gone up over 800 feet. It turns out that I
didn't soften it up enough as I bogged off the line. As we turned off
the track, a camera crew ran out and stopped us for a taped interview for
the Outdoor Channel coverage of the race. When Sue came down to get me
on the 4 wheeler, I was all smiles and she was all puzzled! She
couldn't figure out why I was smiling having just lost a round. "I
just got my first TV interview!", I told her. Now she understood.
She's right, it's the little things in life that count!
The Greer Red Cross race is up
next and I'll be committing some time to testing and tuning in search of the
right setup on this clutch and my bike. When I find it, and I will,
Mavrik Racing will be making some BIG NOISE!
See you at Indy!
And THANKS for visiting the
