It took us a little over 16
hours to make the trek to Dallas Texas for the Lonestar Nationals.
Saturday morning, My sister
Suzi, her husband Tony, and my 3 beautiful nieces showed up about 10am.
Sue and I haven't seen them in about 10 years so it was really special!
During qualifying, we were
again having problem on the starting line. The bike would launch very
hard then stutter for a second before picking up and running. On the
third pass, I finally came up with a good combination of tune-up, launch RPM
and tire pressure and made a really quick pass of 10.17. I say really
quick because we were at a density altitude of almost 4,000 feet! We
ended up qualifying #10 with a pass of 10.5 something. Also, I finally
started cutting some good lights again with an average reaction time of
.052, coming in second place in the reaction time contest!
My sister and family cooked up
a feast of a meal for dinner and they all drove back home to North Dallas
around 10:30PM. They all had a really great time as did we!
The first round of eliminations
went well as I cut another good light and was able to get the bike off the
line cleanly. This was my first round win of the year! In the
second round (quarter finals), I cut an incredible .009 light and was way
out front at 1000' but was worried I might break out (go faster than the
10.3 second index), so I rolled off the gas a little, then back on and saw
the finish line right in front of me so closed the throttle.
Unbelievably, I lost the round by a very slim .0011 seconds! At 130
MPH, that is less than an inch!! My hats off to Susie Wevodau for not
giving up. I won't cut it that close next time, I promise you!
We are now in the top 20 in
points and are looking to move higher in the next race at Budd's Creek,
Maryland July 19th - 20th.
Stay tuned for more!
