Just as last year, Allen
Nusbaum and I hooked up to go to Dallas except that this year we made
Phoenix as well! Having gone to the finals in Phoenix, i was very much
looking forward to Dallas to see just how the bike, rider and tuner would
get along.
On Friday night, Allen and I
both ran 3 passes in test and tune. YES, the combination was still
working! A couple minor tweaks and we were off and running.
Our first pass on Saturday
netted us a 10.39, good enough for the #4 spot. That would eventually
hold up throughout the day. The #2 pass was faster than the index and
we tried to hit the middle point of the passes for round 3 but went even
faster?!?!? Still scratching my head on that one. I guess the
air came to the tune up as we ran our best 60 foot time ever at 1.38
seconds. Maybe I should have taken it out at the bottom end instead of
the top end - live and learn. The #4 spot was just fine with me and we
won the reaction time contest to boot with an average of .024 seconds!
As there were less than 16
bikes in the class, we would not be making a pass Sunday morning - that
meant we were in the show in the afternoon. First and second rounds
went by pretty quick but were far from easy. Pretty scant margins, but
we got the win lights in both. In the semi's, I had Julia Holliday,
the #2 qualifier and a darn good racer - remember Gainesville? As it
turned out, I ran the best run of my career hitting the index with a perfect
10.300 second pass! Then came the rain.............sprinkles really,
but enough to make racing impossible until it stopped and it finally did
stop long enough to finish things. If you have never done it, try this
at night sometime, like about 10:30PM! I had a hole shot on Jack and
was watching, watching, watching him catch up while playing the throttle so
as not to break out. That's when I made a critical error - I looked
down the track and saw the light. At that moment in time, I thought I
was looking at a win light and dumped the throttle. Much to my
surprise, especially when I could now hear and see Jack flying past me, I
realized the the light was actually the finish line marker which sits on top
of the concrete retaining wall at about the same height as the win light but
obviously (ya, now I can say this) A LOT CLOSER. Yes, I lost that run.
Folks, this is why we don't race on paper. Hats off to Jack for not
giving up. You can bet your bottom dollar I will never do THAT again!
On the up side, this was our
second final round appearance in as many races and we now find ourselves #3
in the national points. If this is the worst mistake I make this
season, I will consider the season a success!
Commerce is up next and for us
it's like our home track at only 2 hours drive. We are sure to have a big
crowd around our pit area, why don't you come and join us for some of the
best Drag Racing in the country!
Stay tuned for more!
