It was a grand plan, 2 races in 2
weekends. The only caveat: 3600 miles of driving!
We arrived at Norwalk in time for
the test and tune session, 3 passes later, I pretty much had the bike dialed in.
Saturday morning, the air took a
turn for the worse, but our first pass netted us the #5 spot. Shortly
after noon, my Dad arrived. This was to be his first Harley-Davidson
event. I was glad he came with an open mind, past history indicated a
certain distain for Harley's. 2 more passes made on Saturday showed
improving results keeping pace with the field and in the end retaining the #5
qualifying position.
Elimination day weather was similar
to Saturday and the morning test and tune session went well for me. A
little more tuning and I was right on the index. I had victories in the
first 2 rounds. In the third round I had to wait, in full leathers and
blazing hot sunshine, for the resolution of a re-run between the guy I was to
run and another competitor. I was apparently a little too ready and cut a
.345 light - I swear I waited for the "yellows" to launch! To add insult
to injury, I ran a 10.912 on the 10.90 index to my opponents 10.7 something!
I wasn't at all upset though as I was satisfied to make the quarter finals for
the third race in a row and learned even more about tuning the bike to run the
number.
I am also happy to report that my
Dad left Sunday afternoon "with a whole new outlook" on Harley-Davidson motor
sports. He's even talking about coming to another race. Ain't life
grand!! Now we're off to Denver.........
And THANKS for visiting the MAVRIK
Racing pages!
