I called Joe Perry of Acme Racing
about the Phoenix race as I found out I was going to be there on a business trip
and told him I would be there to watch. He said, "Watch hell, why don't
you let me trailer your bike out there and you can race!" Now there is a
true teammate! As it turned out, I had just signed with Team VIP, Joe was
already on the team. Plans were made and off we went.
I arrived at the track to find my
ride waiting patiently and in perfect condition. As in Bradenton, the bike
was very consistent only this time in the 11.05 range, much closer to the 10.90
index. It launched so hard in the second round of qualifying that I heard
my neck crack! I ended up qualifying somewhere in the middle of the field.
The first round of elimination
brought my first round win of the season and that sure felt good! The
second round had me paired against the #1 plate holder. I knew I had my
hands full, but I also had a strategy. Unfortunately, strategy is not
always the best answer to horsepower and I lost the round by 5 hundredths.
But I did cut a .455 light to the other guys .550 of which I was proud.
Because of the small field, I ended up in the quarter finals and earned my first
paycheck of the year and grabbed the #9 spot in the national rankings. It
was definitely a weekend of firsts for me!
Stay tuned for more!
