* Rockingham 2003 Race Report *

It was last year at the Rockingham race that I took delivery of the new chassis.  I also went to the finals last year, and I would have won if I hadn't burned up yet another clutch.  Rockingham was the scene of my first pass 5 years ago.    I like the Rock!

Qualifying at the Rock went pretty much as it had for the past several races, being way too fast.  To help slow the bike down, I added 30 pounds of lead.  It slowed down a little, but much to my surprise very little, only about .08 seconds!  My first pass was really strange, apparently there was some oil on the track about 20 feet out and I really had my hands full trying to keep off the center stripe.  In 5 years of racing, I had never come that close to crossing the line.  I stayed off of it, but lost considerable ET doing so.  The next 2 passes were the usual .2 seconds too fast.  I ended up qualifying somewhere in the bottom half of the ladder.

On Sunday morning, I had Julian Seaman in the first round.  I knew he was pretty close to the index and figured if I could stay just a wheel ahead of him and cut a good light, I would have a chance.  That's exactly how the race went, but in the end, Julian won.  He ran under by about .01, I ran under about .025.  It was very close.  I was a little disappointed, to say the least, because I knew then and there that I would finish out of the top ten for the year.

I spent the rest of the day helping some other racers, and in the end, worked with Ohio Dave (Ostrowski) getting him lined up on a good spot.  It really made me feel good when Dave went on to win his first national event!

We had a real scare early in the day when my team mate and friend, Steve Moore, had a rather violent engine explosion just past the 60' mark in his first round elimination.  It knocked the wind out of him and he wasn't looking too good.  After a quick trip to the ER, he was released with only bad bruising.  It was bad enough that he rode home with us in the motor home.  On the positive side, he was ready to race again just 3 days later.  I'd say he's pretty tough!

I ended up finishing #5 in the East, and #11 nationally.

I appreciate everyone taking time to follow my progress this year and look forward to a lot more excitement next year with a few new tricks up my sleeve.  I'll have periodic updates as the build progresses.

Look for MAVRIK Racing again next year racing Super Sport with the AHDRA and occasionally, Super Gas with Pro Star.

Please stay tuned for more!
