1829 School “Census” of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
(Soft cover - 8.5 x 11 inches) Author: David Murphy
Stock #: 1829SCMCK
Education was in limited demand on the Kentucky Frontier in the early 1800s. Efforts were made in 1829 to determine the number of children ages 4 to 15 and the number enrolled in school. A state resolution was passed on January 19, 1829 that required the county tax commissioners to account for these children in all counties. The names of the heads of households, whether male or female, and the number of children that fit the objectives are included. This book provides names that are not included on the 1830 census of the county and are not included in other court house records. The 1829 county tax lists serve as the source.
The author has been a genealogist for more than 30 years and has researched the county and its pioneers from the earliest records available. This book is invaluable because it contains copies of the original handwritten tax lists, an alphabetic listing of all names, and a brief history of education in America from the 1600s to 1830. A section on early Muhlenberg County education is also included. This is not only an interesting find, but a must read book for your home library for early Muhlenberg County, Kentucky research.
