The
North Shore of Kauai

North Shore
Princeville and the North Shore are among the most popular vacation spots on Kauai. We've stayed on various parts of the island--Wailua, Kapa'a, Poipu, and Princeville--and always found ourselves spending most of our time enjoying the North Shore. Whether you come to Hawaii for the beautiful beaches, incomparable golf courses, breathtaking diving spots, fantastic snorkeling locations, whale watching, or a wide range of activities, the North Shore is the ultimate destination.
North Shore Beaches
The North Shore has some of the most beautiful beaches on Kauai. Ke'e Beach is a swimming and sunbathing favorite. Haena Beach and Tunnels are both popular beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. Hideaways is one of our favorite beaches because it is almost always uncrowded and is always beautiful. Queen's Bath offers some marvelous swimming, and Secret Beach is Kauai's clothing-optional beach. Pu'u Poa Beach is also a great sunbathing beach. Most of the above beaches, including Ke'e, Tunnels, Hideaways, Queen's Bath, and Secret Beach, are rated as "Real Gems" by The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook.

North Shore Golf
The Prince Course, located in the prestigious Princeville Resort on Kauai's North Shore, is a world-class resort course rated #1 in all the Hawaiian Islands by Golf Digest. Spanning almost 400 picturesque acres, the Prince Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. around cliffs, gorges, and rolling hills. When it opened in 1990, Golf Digest proclaimed the Prince Course to be the best new resort course in the United States. It is both challenging and rewarding. The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook writes
"The design stresses unobstructed expansiveness, with the rolling topography and deep gorges serving as the main hazards and obstacles. There are nine miles of cart paths, and the layout allows for considerable room between holes. Hole 6 offers a delightful march toward the ocean cliffs. At hole 7, you must shoot over a gorge onto a narrow finger of land containing the green and little else. The 14th green is accompanied by a charming waterfall coming out of a hole in the mountain. You won't find a lot of flat areas on this course, but you will find tough, challenging world class golfing."
The Prince Course is not the only great course available in Princeville. The Makai Course, also designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is rated by Golf Digest as the #6 course in Hawaii, and is included in its Top 50 Resort Courses. Really three courses in one, the Ocean Nine overlooks the Pacific, the Lakes Nine winds its way around scenic lakes, and the Woods Nine is nestled amid native woodlands. For 18 holes you get your choice of two, with Ocean/Lakes being the most popular. The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook writes "The Ocean is the most challenging and interesting of the three, as well as the longest. The 6th and 7th holes offer dramatic views of the North Shore coastline from the edge of a steep cliff."
No other area of Kauai can compete with Princeville when the quality of the golf courses is factored in. Guests at The Cliffs 7301 are entitled to a 20% discount at both Princeville courses.
Dive Spots
The North Shore of Kauai also offers some great shore diving locations. In fact, four of the top five best sites for shore dives are on the North Shore. Ke'e Beach, Tunnels, Cannons, and The Hole are among the top spectacular North Shore dive spots. Abundant sea turtles and plentiful brightly colored fish, lava tubes, ledges, reef sharks, and caves make for some wondrous underwater sights.
Boat dives off Ni'ihau are also available, with crystal clear water and fantastic visibility, lots of sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins, and your best opportunity to see the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
Snorkeling
There are several great snorkeling sites on the North Shore. Our personal favorite is Hideaways. Although the descent to the beach is somewhat difficult, it is worth the hike. We've often had the beach to ourselves, and have sometimes been joined by a few inquisitive sea turtles. There is a diverse fish population, and the visibility is usually excellent. The beach has marvelous coarse sand and large false kamani trees for shade. The snorkeling at Hideaways can't be topped during calm seas.
Ke'e Beach also offers great snorkeling during calm seas, but is more accessible and thus more crowded than Hideaways. During summer months the lagoon is usually calm and provides great snorkeling.
Tunnels is often referred to as one of Kauai's snorkeling nirvanas. This fantastic beach is protected by a wide-fringing reef. The wide variety of underwater like is one of the prime attractions of Tunnels.
Pu'u Poa Beach is another beach that we often visit. During summer months the snorkeling can be quite good, and the beach itself is very nice if you are accompanied by sunbathers.
Queen's Bath also offers good snorkeling opportunities, as does 'Anini Beach park.
While the snorkeling at Poipu, on the southern part of the island, is good, we've always found snorkeling at North Shore sites to be exceptional. Be sure to visit Poipu while you are on the island, but if you're like us you'll always return to the beauty and variety of the North Shore.
Whale Watching
If you visit the islands between December and March, you'll have the opportunity to watch the humpback whales as they visit the Hawaiian Islands. More plentiful as Spring approaches, whales can be viewed from inside The Cliffs 7301. That's another reason why it is important to have accommodations with an ocean view. From the living room or ocean lanai, whales can be seen carousing in the emerald waters of the Pacific. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens to get your best view of these ocean giants. The Cliffs even has a gazebo on the bluff overlooking the ocean so that you can get an even closer view.
Activities
Although Kauai is not as commercial as Maui or Oahu, there are still plenty of activities available on the North Shore. These activities are not limited to the aforementioned golf, diving, and snorkeling. The Cliffs resort has four tennis courts, a pool, a putting green, table tennis, bike rentals, boogie board rentals, and other activities. Various companies on the North Shore also offer horseback riding, ocean or river kayaking, and helicopter rides departing from the Princeville airport. You can also hike along the Kalalua Trail overlooking the Na Pali costline, go camping, and just spend time enjoying the lush tropical forests of the North Shore. The Na Pali coastline is awesome to behold, and we highly recommend one of the boat trips such as Hanalei Sea Tours. The Kileaua Lighthouse and Bird Sanctuary are also great spots to visit.
