Birding Areas of Northeast Minnesota

Hedbom Logging Trail Bog

The bog is located roughly 1.5 miles inside Aitkin County and 2 miles inside St. Louis County. At the intersection of Robinson Rd and Hedbom Logging Trail is a yellow gate which might be used to shut down the road if there is any significant snow on the ground. This is a new birding area that currently has a reliable pair of Great Gray Owls and recent sightings of both American Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers. The woodpeckers can be found by driving slow along the Hedbom Logging Trail Road and stopping when you see fresh bark stripping on the coniferous trees. (Black Spruce and Tamarack). The nearest town for food and gas is Floodwood located on Hwy. 2. There are no residents along this stretch of road so be careful when driving and make sure you have plenty of gas in your car.
