Hiring a local guide such as myself has many benefits:
Local guides know the back roads and can save out of state birders a lot of time and energy!
Local guides are very experience in driving in snow. Many of the ditches in the back country are snow covered and a lot of out state birders find themselves in these ditches!
Local guides are always on top of the latest bird sightings. A good number of bird sightings do not make it on the listservs. Also most if not all local bird guides keep in contact with each other and keep each other up to date on what's around.
Local guides also know the locations of many of the out of the way birding locations that are not mentioned in bird guiding books.
What seperates me from other birding guides in Duluth is that, I am the only one that was born and raised in Duluth. I know the people, the land marks, the weather patterns, all the backroads, the best restaurants to eat at and the ones to stay away from.
