In a chapter of Moments of Growth, the author writes, “Laughter, struggling with questions of life, and looking into my heart have been ingredients in my growth. I found all three of these experiences at the newspaper, the seminary, and at the hospital. Although separate, they have become one in my heart”.

One day, as I was preparing to leave and elderly patient, I said to her, “I’m going to have a prayer with you now, but this time I want you to tell me for what you want me to pray?” She replied, “I want you to pray for me to die”. “I know that it is presumptuous of me to believe that I understand the worship of prayer, but I remember the lady because she died two days later”.

They symbolize some aspect of human experience - thus we have green for growth, white for purity of love, red for the power of the spirit and purple for preparation and penitence.
