Bulldog Avenue

The County Road 350E is just east of Moore’s Bridge. The part of this road from the Wheeling Road to the New River Bridge is about one mile in length. This stretch of road is referred to as “Bulldog Avenue” by the local people. Once you cross the iron bridge over the New River (Houchins Drain) the road is just called 350E.

Many people ask why this straight flat, piece of road in the Patoka River bottoms is called “Bulldog Avenue”. To answer that question you have to go back 75 years or so.

Most all of the property on both sides of this road was owned by the same prominent family and as sometimes happens some members of the family” fell out” with other members of the family. They didn’t speak to one another and didn’t associate with one another.

At some point two members on opposite sides of the family met and harsh words were exchanged. One person involved filed charges of slander in Gibson Circuit Court. The trial came before the judge in court and was attended by many in the community. Tom Duncan an attorney of some standing represented the defendant in the case. He ask the judge to dismiss the case for lack of evidence. The judge threw the case out and Attorney Tom Duncan admonish both parties “to go home and bark back and forth across that road like a couple of bulldogs”. Hence forth and forever after it has been “Bulldog Avenue”.
