Missourians for Tax Justice
- A People's Effort for Tax Fairness
Missouri has one of the most regressive tax
systems in the United States. Middle and low income people pay
a much larger share of their income in taxes than wealthier people
do. At the same time, many essential state services are underfunded.
Our unfair tax system will be changed only if people throughout
Missouri demand it.
In December, 1991, a group of individuals and organizations came
together to form Missourians for Tax Justice as a means for people
to work together for tax fairness.
MTJ believes that adequate revenue for essential needs must
be obtained by making our state tax system more fair as well
as more productive.
The state tax laws can be changed by action of the Missouri General
Assembly and the Governor. An alternative is the use of an initiative
petition to place a tax change proposal on the ballot for approval
by the voters.
Every citizen can help in the effort to achieve a fairer state
tax system.
- Find out what kind of tax changes the candidates for office
favor. Do they support taxes based on the ability to pay?
Or do they want only to protect people in the top income brackets?
Support candidates who support fair taxes!
- When the state legislature is in session, let your state representative
and state senator, as well as the governor, hear from you.
