Course Description- We will be focusing our scientific studies on matter and energy; more specifically, the concepts of elements, electricity, chemical and physical changes, force and motion, waves, machines, and the scientific method.  We will also touch on the universe and the anatomy of our galaxy.

Grading Procedure-

10% of your overall score will be your FOLDER/ NOTEBOOK.  I recommend a 3 ring binder to keep your belongings safe and organized.  This should be kept by the student and brought to class daily.  Handouts, returned assignments, lecture notes, quizzes, labs, etc. are expected to be organized in your folder for each marking period.  All work MUST have the student’s name, date, and hour to receive credit.  The folder will be graded on organization and completeness of content which will include the following for EACH MARKING PERIOD:

Ø      Signed course outline (this form, signed by your parent or guardian)

Ø      Vocabulary assignments

Ø      Dated class notes

Ø      Handouts

Ø      Returned assignments (tests, labs, quizzes, homework, class work…)

20% of your overall score will be for PARTICIPATION.  You have the opportunity to earn 5 points per class.  This is an easy 20%!!!  All you need to do is come to class, follow the class rules, and not be tardy.  Absences are unexcused if the student misses a class and the absence is not prearranged (with a signed note) or a parent calls in on the day of the absence.  A student is considered tardy if he or she is not in their seat when the bell rings.  If there is a reason for being late, it is the student’s responsibility to give the teacher a proper explanation.

20% of your score will be class work and homework.  Credit will be given for homework that is completed and on time.  This work must be completed and turned in on time to receive credit.  Most assignments will be due the same day of class; however some projects and group work may require more time and occasional visits to the library.

50% of your score will be all of your tests, labs, and quizzes.  These assignments are more challenging, and will be worth more.  Tests, labs, and quizzes can only be made up after school- an appointment should be made to complete this make-up work.  There will be no talking allowed during any test or quiz.  This is your warning!  If you talk, you earn a zero.  These are individual assessments and need to be your own work.

Ø      All work is expected to be turned in on time.  The only exceptions are if you are ill or have a family emergency (a note, e-mail, or a phone call from home is required).  If an absence is unexcused, you may not turn the assignment for credit (skippers don’t get credit, however I will be looking for the work in the folder).

Ø      Missed work due to an excused absence is due 1 day after the absence.  If a student misses more than one day, they have the same number of days to make up the assignments.  For example, if you miss 3 days, you have 3 days after your return to school to turn the assignments in.    You will need to write MAKE UP WORK clearly on the top of all make up work in order for it to be accepted.

Ø      Look on the make up calendar for missing work.  Extra handouts will be in the make up work crate.  This is your responsibility.  You are in charge of getting the missed work.

Discipline:  If a rule is broken, the teacher may take the following actions: verbal warning, assign detention or ISS, call a parent, or refer to a counselor or administrator.  Remember that the other students are here to learn and poor or disruptive behavior infringes on that privilege.

Class Rules:

1)     Be in your seat when the bell rings and be ready to participate (no napping).

2)     Food and beverages (other than water) are not allowed in class.

3)     Cursing, swearing, or other disrespectful terms are not acceptable.

4)     Show respect to your classmates, the teacher, and yourself.  Interrupting, name calling, talking back, and holding conversations while the teacher or other students are talking / working is disrespectful.  Act maturely and safely.

5)     You are not to leave the room without permission.  You must have an appropriate pass.  I do not give restroom passes easily.  Use the restroom during breaks.

6)     All school rules and district policies (headphones, cell phones, dress code, etc. are to be followed).

7)     You are responsible for texts / combination locks that you are assigned.  You will be charged for any damages to said items.

8)     You are responsible for keeping your area clean.  If the teacher has to clean up after you, it is considered disrespectful and discourteous and you will lose your daily participation points.

9)      Do not move the chairs or desks unless instructed to do so.

Special Note:  I will be happy to make myself available for after school or Saturday help, but please let me know when you wish to come in so that I may alter my schedule as needed.

Student contract: I have read and understand the above guidelines to the class.  I will do my best to follow them and be successful in the class!
