Reeds are bundled to make boats as these Lake Titicaca residents have done for centuries. Thor Heyerdahl made them famous when he traveled to Surique Island on Lake Titicaca to have a boat made for one of his famous expeditions to duplicate possible ocean voyages of the far past. The boats are used for one year and then retired as they become water-logged.
