Base camp on Nevado Sajama is near a small spring, the only water source on this side of the mountain. The altitude is around 15,500 feet -- 1500 feet above the valley we drove through to the mountain but still 6000 feet below the summit. Our route to Camp 1 is behind the first ridge descending from the mountain on the left of center and up a small ice tongue to a rock outcropping just below the glacier.
