Text Editor ToolsMetapadEditPad Classic
This little text editor has much to like and it is every bit as fast as Notepad, if not faster. It has become my default plain text editor, replacing EditPad Classic described below. Metapad has the following useful features: Persistent window placement; dirty file notification; intelligent Find and Replace; external viewer support (e.g. web browser); usable accelerator keys (Ctrl+S, Ctrl+N, etc.); dual customizable font support; optional Quick Exit (Esc key); configurable tab stop setting; auto-indent mode; Go to Line/Column Seamless UNIX text file support; block indent and unindent (Tab, Shift+Tab); recent files list; WYSIWYG printing; and a good looking status bar & funky toolbar.
The standard NotePad is a very limited ASCII text viewer and editor. With EditPad Classic, you can open as many files at a time as your computer's memory allows which is something you can't do with NotePad. You can change between open files by clicking on their tabs. You can specify many print settings: font, margins, headers/footers, etc., and you have the option of keeping the EditPad Classic window on top of all other windows. EditPad Classic puts an icon in the system tray that remains visible, even if EditPad Classic is closed. This way you have easy and fast access to EditPad Classic, without the need to keep it running all the time. In addition, EditPad Classic reads UNIX (LF only) and Mac (CR only) text files (in addition to DOS/Win CR+LF files, of course) and can export files to both formats. The ROT-13 standard is used on the Usenet for making (possibly) offensive texts illegible. Supports ANSI <=> OEM (DOS ASCII) conversion and MAPI support for e-mailing texts. This program serves as a great HTML editor for those who like to manually create or edit their web pages. EditPad Classic is easy to install and uninstall and easy to make as your default text file editor/viewer. EditPad Classic is "Postcardware" which means that if you decide to regularly use it, the author asks that you send him a nice postcard to say thanks and to tell him how you like EditPad Classic. |
