I went to see Lord of the Rings with my mom today. Let me first start by saying that I haven't read the books. Something that has caused many a sigh from a co-worker and my fiancé.

Anyway, about the movie. It is visually stunning. Each place from Hobbiton to Lothlorien has its own feel, its own colors that bring about a sense of realism and wonder. Set design and planning was spared no expense and beautiful New Zealand was transformed into a legend. One could watch the movie ten times and still notice some new detail of a statue in Rivendell or the books in Bilbo's home.

The cast is fun and interesting. From Ian McKellen (Magneto X-Men) and Hugo Weaving (Mr. Smith Matrix) to relative newcomer Orlando Bloom as Legolas the cast is full of talent and each member seems to completely immerse themselves in their role. Viggo Mortenson even went so far as having a tooth knocked out in a battle sequence! (Ok he lost it on accident, but the other sounds more heroic.) As the movie plays out we see many things within the group; mischief, friendship, camaraderie, and admiration.

Joy, sorrow, and suspense. "But we're 6 days from Rivendell", put my heart in my throat. From beginning to end I was completely mesmerized by the movie. You want to run when they run and hug Frodo to you so he is safe. It takes more than flashy special effects to wrap an audience in the plot and Peter Jackson has done just that. I laughed and I cried on more than one occasion. I highly recommend this movie to one and all.

More on Viggo and Orlando to come.
