First I want to take the time to say thank you to the two faithful readers of my blog. Most people just wander by but these two are back almost every day. One sneaks here while at work and the other reads from his basement. Hi guys!!! *smiles*
Escape From L.A. was on tonight. It's a great campy movie and I always find myself with "I Love L.A." stuck in my head after I watch it. Directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell "L.A." finds Snake 15 years after he escaped from New York.
The cast is great. Pam Grier as Hershe Las Palmas, the most drop dead gorgeous to die for woman he ever laid his one eye on. Bruce Campbell as the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills. Steve Buscemi as Map to the Stars Eddie. And Snake Plissken. The Self Made Critic said it best, "And what about Snake? Kurt Russell brings back the darkest, most lovable anti-hero in years. He speaks in a monotone whisper at a decibel so low it can't be heard by dogs. He's big, he's bad, he's dressed in black. He has a bunch of guns and packs a mean wallop. He's completely and totally cool."
The plot of the movie is simple enough. The year is 2013 and an earthquake has separated Los Angeles from the rest of the country. The New Moral America has taken advantage of this and turned L.A. into a penal colony. The President's daughter has stolen a doomsday device and fled to L.A. It's up to Snake to find her and retrieve the device before Plutoxin 7 kills him.
The movie also makes some great points. Moral law is much harsher than judicial. Once it's in place how do you go back? Are we moving to a moral law system currently? How far off are some of the points made in the film? The next couple of quotes sum up things quite nicely.
"Welcome to the human race."

- Snake asks, "Ya got a smoke?"
Malloy replies, "The United States is a non-smoking nation. No smoking. No drinking. No drugs. No women, unless of course you're married. No guns. No foul language. No red meat."
Snake sighs, "Land of the Free."
"Welcome to the human race."
