For those of you that don't all ready know Farscape has been canceled by the Sci-Fi Channel. Oddly enough I learned of this via a six degrees of separation, well ok it was only two degrees, Caitlin Kiernan to Neil Gaiman to me, but still. I'm upset by this. Not hurl myself to the floor and bawl upset but bothered a great deal. Why must networks cancel top shows and keep crap like Lexx? *sigh*
Now to the real reason for this blog. I ask all of the Farscape fans reading this to write to the Sci-Fi Channel and USA (parent company) to say do
not cancel Farscape. Below is a copy of the letter I typed up, all but three sentences which were pulled from one of the many online petitions, and dropped in the mail.
To Whom It May Concern:
I was totally shocked when I learned that Sci Fi had used an ‘out’ option and would not be producing a fifth season of Farscape.
It now appears that rather than continuing high caliber programming such as Farscape, the Sci-Fi Channel is seeking generic programming and latching on to low-budget, low-plot shows that run in high quantity. This is a disservice to the loyal fans of Farscape that have helped the Sci Fi Channel grow and become a widely popular and successful channel. Many Farscape fans will not continue to support a channel that cancels top quality shows in their prime to air cheap remakes of classic movies and poor quality science fiction television shows.
Farscape has continuously shown itself to not only be a solid show with strong ratings but a benchmark for science fiction. It has a large audience (1.5 million for the most recently aired episode Unrealized Reality), has won several awards (including this years Saturn award for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series, and Best Actor on Television for Ben Browder), and has inspired a video game as well as a D20 role-play setting.
I ask that if you do not plan to renew this wonderfully fun and exciting show that you release the rights so another network that realizes the potential of Farscape can pick up the first 88 episodes and continue on with season 5 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Rachel ****
This is the first time I've written a letter to a network. Mainly because it's the first time I was right there when the cancellation happened. Before I didn't know until after the show had been saved or just stopped airing. For those of you who do wish to send letters here is the relevant mailing information:
