Mock Drafts: 2004 Lion Draft Picks
Rounds 1-3
Sorted by last revision date & site name
In Medio Revisio: Friday, 4.23.04
Thank you to Hail Redskins for inspiration and some new mock draft sites!

Rumor: The Patriots have negotiated a standing offer with the Detroit Lions to acquire the sixth overall pick in the draft in exchange for four picks, including their two first-round selections, according to an industry source. The way the deal reportedly would work is if the target of the Patriots' affection is still on the board when the Lions are ready to select at No. 6, the Lions would trade their first-round choice, as well as a fourth-round pick (No. 105), to New England for the Patriots' two first-round picks (Nos. 21 and 32), one of its second-round choices (either No. 56 or 63), and a fourth-round pick (No. 113). By Ron Borges, Globe Staff, 4/1/2004 boston.com As expected, this information has since been refuted by both parties, though they admitted that they have talked. Mariucci has said they would like to trade down, but not that far down. Some rumors also have followed that Denver traded with Cincinnati at #17 to be able to package a deal with their 2nd round pick(s?) for #6. Other rumors have involved unlikely 3-way deals with Tampa and some other teams. All lack credibility.

Bengals Zone (Higdon) Vs. 1 , Vs. 2 , Vs. 3 , (Cannot find Vs. 4) Vs. 5 , Vs. 6 Roy Williams, WR, Texas;
  • Kellen Winslow, WR, Miami (fl);
  • Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Pitts;
  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • was Kenechi Udeze, DE, USC
  • They haven't done much to convince me that Roy Williams would be the pick instead of Sean Taylor (whom they have going one pick later). If Sean Taylor is gone, then Kenechi
  • Greg Jones, RB, Fl. St.

  • was N/A, no change,
  • was Maurice Clarett, RB, xOhio St
  • They haven't done much to convince me that Greg Jones should be the pick instead of Justin Smiley, Chris Snee, Karlos Dansby, Ben Watson or even a DT like Donnell Washington, Tim Anderson, or Dwan Edwards (who I wouldn't pick in the second round, but I sure would pick him before Greg Jones!).
  • Demorrio Williams, LB, Nebraska
  • was N/A
  • They got one right! Except, if Teddy Lehman fell this far I would say they would take him over Demorrio. I also don't like the Barrett Green clone reference. Yikes.

    Fantasy Tailgate (Washington based fantasy guys) #21 in trade w/Pats: Kevin Jones
    #32 in trade w/Pats: OC Jake Grove
  • was Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami (fl)
  • These guys sure do believe in trades. It's fun to speculate, but I don't believe it's realistic. If we can dream I'd rather trade with Jags for #9, Pittsburgh for #11, or (more realistically) Denver for #17 and another 2nd rounder to have a chance at Reggie Williams, Michael Clayton or DJ Williams (I do not think Vilma is all that, though the Lions do from all reports. Of course if you belive reports they would be picking Steven Jackson at #6--Yikes). I guess Jones would be a worthwhile pick at #21 (though I would rather they wait until next year), but it would be hard to pass up Vince Wilfork who is a top ten pick IMO, Ben Troupe or Rashaun Woods. Jason Babin, Karlos Dansby and Justin Smiley seem more likely than Grove. Still, I like the idea of getting two 1st rounders for the #6.Too bad Bill Belichick won't cooperate.

    GBN Draft Report (Lindsay) Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami (fl);
  • was Mike Williams, WR, USC
  • was Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami (fl);
  • no change, no change;
  • was Sean Taylor, S, Miami (fl)
  • I respect Lindsay's opinion, but I believe this would be one of the biggest mistakes of the Millen era.
  • Dontarrious Thomas, LB, Auburn
  • was Karlos Dansby, OLB, Auburn
  • was Lee Evans, WR, Wisconsin;
  • was Greg Jones, RB, Florida St.;
  • was Chris Perry, RB, UofM
  • LB is a need and he could play inside or out, but I don't know if he's even the best LB on the board with Lehman & Daryl Smith still there. Nevertheless without a doubt, Rashaun Woods, Ben Watson & Jason Babin would not be passed over for Don.
  • Tatum Bell, RB, Okl. St
  • was Chris Perry, RB, UofM
  • was N/A
  • Well, Tatum is a good pick, but Keary Colbert might be a better one if they don't pick a WR earlier. Chris Snee, Sean Locklear, Courtney Watson, PK Sam, Bernard Berrian, Cedric Cobbs & Ernest Wilford would all be considerations based on who he has left going in the 3rd round.

    NY Football Digest (Secor) Vs. 5.0 Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami (fl)
  • no change,
  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • was Kevin Jones, RB, Virginia Tech
  • I respect what Secor has to say, so maybe I'll accept Winslow being drafted by the Lions. But I don't pretend to like it. Yet, he admits that "I am not sure the TE position is a must need for the Lions." Secor also says Udeze could be a top 10 selection, too. Additionally, he also agrees with me that Reggie Williams (without Mike Williams (*me)) "could end up being the best reciever in this class." This is quite a concession, considering he is from Larry Fitzgerald country. This confirms my opinion about both of these guys (Udeze or Reggie W) being acceptable value at #6.

  • was Will Smith, DE, Ohio St.;
  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • no change, no change, no change
  • was Steven Jackson, RB, Oregon St
  • I feel like I'm in a time warp here. Back to Steven Jackson, with Sean Taylor still on the board? Brock Marion is nice, but Brian Walker is not.
  • Michael Boulware, OLB, Fl. St.
  • Tatum Bell, RB, Oklahoma St.;
  • was Dontarrious Thomas, OLB, Auburn;
  • no change, no change; no change
  • I'd feel better about the Lions picking Boulware if he actually liked to hit people. He's got a lot of physical talent, so depending on who else is available this makes some sense...especially if they're drafting him to play SS and have somebody who can motivate him to hit. He seems to avoid it as much as possible from what I've seen. I appreciate a SS and LB that know how to hit. Now, if Kevin Jones, Michael Clayton, or Ben Watson are all sitting there, as they do in this mock, I would take Michael Clayton ... as much as I don't want to hear about Clinton Portis Jr. (KJ mourners) from the WhatIf Club next year.
  • Ernest Wilford, WR, Virginia Tech
  • Keiwan Ratliff, CB, Florida;
  • was Chris Snee, OG, Boston Col;
  • was N/A
  • WR is a good choice in the 3rd round if somebody dropped to the 2nd round who shouldn't have. I would probably put Keary Colbert & Devard Darling ahead of Wilford, but that's a personal preference. I could also see an OL being taken here (OG/OC Nick Leckey, OG Chris Snee, OT Kelly Butler, OT Travelle Wharton, OT Stacey Andrews)

  • was Karlos Dansby, OLB, Auburn;

  • was Maurice Clarett, RB, xOhio St.;
  • no change,
  • was Greg Jones, RB, Florida St.
  • Now that's what I'm talking about! Take the BPA at a position of need! Tough to pass on Rashaun Woods, but there are more worthy WRs than DEs in this draft. I could maybe even see another team trading up for one of the last every down DEs left in this draft.
  • Chris Cooley, Utah State, TE
  • was N/A
  • I've seen a lot of people ranking him in the 4th round so this seems a little high. I've never seen him play, so I don't have a clue on this one. Those who might be better fits who are left on his draft board are Bernard Berrian, Ernest Wilford, Tatum Bell, Sean Locklear, Tatum Bell, and Keiwan Ratliff.

  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • was Steven Jackson, RB, Oregon St.;
  • no change, no change, no change
  • If Taylor IS gone (which is looking more likely); Udeze, Will Smith or Reggie Williams would all be better picks for the Lions, IMO, even if they cannot trade down. Getting them in a trade-down would be even better. Winslow is more hype than production and both Bens have as much talent as he has.
  • Michael Clayton, WR, LSU
  • Chris Perry, RB, UM;
  • no change
  • was Michael Jenkins, WR, Ohio St.;
  • was Keiwan Ratliff, CB, Florida;
  • no change, no change,
  • was Michael Jenkins, WR, Ohio St.
  • This is a much better pick, though if they don't take Winslow first Troupe would be a great choice here (since he is still on the draft board in this scenario).
  • Tatum Bell, RB, Oklahoma St.
  • was Brandon Everage, FS, Oklahoma;
  • was Jason Shivers, FS, Purdue;
  • Bo Schobel, DE, TCU;
  • was Stephen Peterman, OG, LSU;
  • no change,
  • was Justin Smiley, OG, Alabama,
  • was Nick Leckey, C, Kansas St.
  • Tatum Bell in the 3rd round is good value, but I would also be happy with a LB (Demorrio Williams, Courney Watson, Darryl Smith, Rod Smith), or OL (The best OGs went early in this mock leaving Travell Wharton & Sean Locklear as next best) who are left on his board.

  • Thanks for catching up with the rest of the mockers, Dennis. It's about time you put Sean Taylor in for the Lions, but your next draft probably pushes Taylor up to Washington...like almost every other draft lately. Now, how long will it take for you to drop Roethlisberger out of the top 5? You probably can't tell, but I'm being just a tad sarcastic.

    East Coast Sports News (Al Fronczak) Trade w/ Texans: #10, #71 & #138:
  • Steven Jackson
  • was Kenechi Udezi, DE, USC;

  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • was (w/trade) Chris Gamble, CB, Ohio St.
  • was Kellen Winslow, TE, Miami (FL);
  • was Chris Gamble, CB, Ohio St.
  • Trading down for Jackson is about the only thing that would make this pick sufferable. Losing out on Taylor #8 and Udeze #9 would make this draft trade not worth it. I'm all for a draft trade, but this one just doesn't seem like enough without the 2nd round pick. I know the extra 3rd rounder is inviting, but getting Jackson instead of Taylor would be a severe drop-off. Of course, if they took Will Smith, DJ Williams or Reggie Williams with this pick it would put a different complexion on it: DEs are going to be very valuable come draft day, because of the lack of depth at the position. DJ Williams is the perfect LB fit for the Lions (better than the much talked about Vilma), IMO, since he could play SLB or MLB. And Reggie is the best Williams WR left in the draft. (Yep, better than the legend.)
  • Sean Jones, S, Georgia
  • was Chris Perry, RB, UM;
  • was N/A
  • This is an alright pick for #36 but considering the state of the Lion Safeties I'm not sure it is where they would go. If Antwan Odom or Ben Watson are there, as in this mock, I don't think the Lions would be able to pass both of them for a FS.

  • Once again a mocker reaches for a RB for the Lions, leaving better players to slide down. Only this time Rashaun Woods joins Ben Watson, Justin Smiley, Donnell Washington, Jason Babin, & Teddy Lehman in the passed over department. Rashaun would be a no-brainer here.

  • was Sean Taylor, FS, Miami (fl);
  • no change, no change.
  • As Wright admits, this is too high for Jackson & as he also says, it seems more likely that the Lions will take a nice trade offer rather than reach for a player. I do NOT see Jackson as being a good fit for the Lions, in any case. If they're bound and determined to take a RB in the first round (doubtful) I think it should be Kevin Jones, despite the poor workout times.

  • was Chris Perry, RB, UofM;

  • Sean Locklear, OG, NC St.
  • was Demorrio Williams, OLB, Nebraska;

  • was Isaac Hilton, DE, Hampton;
  • was Tatum Bell, RB, Oklahoma St.;
  • was Nick Leckey, C, Kansas St.;
  • was Isaac Hilton, DE, Hampton;
  • was Shaun Phillips, DE, Purdue
  • Frankly, any of the guys that Wright has mentioned as possible 3rd rounders over the past weeks (except for Phillips) would make sense here. He could have also thrown ILB Courtney Watson, WR Derrick Hamilton, Devard Darling and DT Tim Anderson into this discussion and it would make equal sense. Obviously, finding an OG is a priority, but I think FA is still an option as temporary solutions. It would be difficult to fill all the holes in one year.

  • Wait, before you say "NO WAY" read his reasoning. He actually did some homework on this one. Because of losing Ellis he sees a need for DT. What he doesn't factor in is having drafted Cory Redding last year, but he could also argue that Redding is unproven at DT and Harris would be an upgrade...and he would be right. He also mentions that Udeze could be a consideration here, or trading down to draft Steven Jackson. I like the thought process he used, just don't agree with his conclusion.

  • About the only way a RB gets selected here is if Kevin Jones somehow slips through, which doesn't seem likely to me...but then who thought Boss Bailey would slip last year. Tatum Bell (sometimes seen in 2nd round mocks) & Julius Jones would also be a better fits for the Lions and they are slated for the 3rd round in most mocks (including his). Karlos Dansby, Jason Babin, Donnell Washington, Devery Henderson, Teddy Lehman, Jake Grove, Justin Smiley would be better 2nd round value based upon his draft board. Also, Ben Watson slipping into the 3rd round doesn't seem likely...see next column.

  • Too late, I'm laughing so hard the tears are flowing anyway. Ben Troupe, Vernon Carey, Jason Babin, Antwan Odom, Ahmad Carroll, Darnell Dockett are generally considered 1st round talent, though a couple might slip through. Lions will not pass up talent to draft a limited RB.

  • The main problem I have with Sanders is that he is worse in coverage than Brian Walker. There are at least 7 other safeties I would take before him, and according to this mock, I think half of them are available. Jauron would have to give his thumbs up on this one, and I don't see it happening. Now, I admit I'm swayed by the story by Tom K. that indicates they only want to keep 3 Safeties on roster. Additionally, Jason Babin (whom they have shown interest in), Jack Grove, Courtney Watson (whom they have shown interest in), and other higher rated guys available when Lions pick make Bob Sanders a doubtful pick.

  • I really like Madieu and see him left off many mock drafts. Sadly, however, the only way the Lions add another safety through the draft is if he can replace one of the guys already on roster. I'm not sure Madieu would be a replacement for anybody right now. There will likely be a bigger steal at a position of need available, like WR Devard Darling, OT Stacy Andrews, OT Kelly Butler, OC/OG Nick Leckey, OLB Demorrio Williams, WR Ernest Wilford, DL Terry Johnson, RB Julius Jones. All would be more likely picks than another FS.

  • was Mike Williams, WR, USC;
  • was Steven Jackson, RB, Oregon St.;
  • no change,
  • was Sean Taylor, S, Miami (fl)
  • Computer Alternatives based on need: LB DJ Williams (a little too high for him), CB DeAngelo Hall (huh? CB is a need?), DT/DE Tommie Harris (Maybe if the Lions think he's a DE), Jonathan Vilma (way too high for him here). I think the basic problem is that their needs index is messed up. Lions need DE more than DT, OG more than CB, and WR more than either.
  • Greg Jones, RB, FSU.
  • no change
  • was Ahmad Carroll, CB, Arkansas;
  • Matt Ware, S, UCLA;
  • was Michael Turner, RB, Northern Illinois
  • Greg Jones is just not a good choice here, as I've said elsewhere. Computer Alternatives based on need: OLB Michael Boulware, DT Dwan Edwards, OC Jake Grove, OT Jacob Rogers. Okay, the messed up needs index put another DT as an alternative when DE need is greater. I think WLB is okay unless somebody talented is too good to pass up and IMO MLB is a greater need. WR is still a greater need over all these others. And OT? Though OT is a possibility later on in the draft if he could contribute at OG, but picking an OT this high (unless they think he's an unbelievalbe deal), seems a little messed up.
  • Devard Darling, WR, Washington St.
  • Chris Snee, OG, Boston College
  • was Keary Colbert, WR, USC;
  • no change, no change
  • Sweet to finally get a WR. But I just don't see Jason Babin still being there and I'm pretty sure the Lions would pee their pants if he did. I guess I would rather see them take a WR in the 2nd round (if there is one there that they like), so that they can take LB Demorrio Williams in the third if he's there (I really like this kid). {There are some OGs who I believe could still be starters who will be available in the fourth round. (If not, there are a couple FAs that would be upgrades to Matt Joyce. Not Larry Allen for what he will cost!). There are so many O-line guys that fall through the cracks because they're the unheralded members of the team that I think you can find quality on the second day. Also, LB Roderick Green, RB/WR Jason Geathers, or DT Ahmad Childress in the fourth/fifth round area would be nice, too. FB Thomas Tepeh or Troy Fleming are guys I wouldn't sneeze at either on the second day.}

  • was Robert Gallery, LT, Iowa;

  • Well, I never said Drew was good at mocks. I respect his profiles on players, but his picks for the Lions continue to smell up the joint. With Taylor still on the board, I say "no way".
  • Terry Johnson, DT, Washington
  • was Chad Lavalais, DT, LSU;
  • was N/A
  • I belive Drew is under the impression that the Lions NEED to take a DT. I like Tank, but not only does this seem high for him considering the other d-linemen available, but players at other positions who are rated much higher are still available in his mock; like Karlos Dansby, Ben Troupe, Dontarrious Thomas, Devard Darling, & Jake Grove (to name a few) I think they'll go BPA...and hope for a WR to slip to them at #36.
  • Jason Babin
  • was Julius Jones, RB, Notre Dame;
  • was N/A
  • Babin would make sense for the Lions. Not only have they shown interest in him, but he fills an area of need. Only problem is that he's not a sleeper pick anymore. Everybody knows about him. Some experts have him as the 3rd or 4th best DE after Udeze and Smith. Therefore, since he has been going in the first round of many mocks, I will guess that he won't be available in the 3rd round. But Tank Johnson might be. Maybe Drew got the two picks mixed up?

    Draft Steel (John Clifford) Roy Williams, WR, Texas
  • @#16 SF trade: Reggie Williams, WR, Wash;
  • I think Roy is going to be a less dedicated duplicate of CRog, and there are complimentary (tough, over the middle #2) WRs who will be available in lower rounds. And are less expensive if they bust (like I think Roy will). I'm not sure right now which one I dislike more, Winslow or RWill. Udeze, Harris, Wilfork, & Will Smith would be my choices at #6. But Vilma or DJ Williams, Kevin Jones, Ben Troupe, Reggie Williams or Rashaun Woods would be good fits in a trade-down situation.
  • Ben Watson, TE, Georgia
  • no change
  • This is a great choice, especially if they pass on Winslow. Devery Henderson, Teddy Lehman, Jason Babin, Sean Jones, Justin Smiley, Chris Snee, Donnell Washington, are the only guys left on the board here who would make me pause before handing in the card.
  • Tatum Bell, RB, Oklahoma St.
  • was Maurice Clarett, RB, xOhio St.
  • Again, he's a good pick for the Lions. A WR (Ernest Wilford, Keary Colbert, Derrick Hamilton, Jerricho Cotchery, Bernard Berrian, etc) might also become a logical choice here if they pass on the WR in the 1st & 2nd rounds. This might also be a good place for a MLB (Darryl Smith, Rod Davis) or OL (Locklear, Peterman. Leckey, Stacy Andrews) to land.

Jones is one dimensional ... though the one dimension is pretty impressive. Picking Jones ahead of Ben Watson/Ben Troupe, Michael Clayton, Jason Babin, Vernon Carey, or Chris Snee will be a future lesson about why you don't reach for need.

And Justin Smiley is still available in the 3rd round? Come on.
