Jeff Backus 6-5.0,

Contract |

611.90 |
#1 LT |
’04: Played 16 games, 16 starts. Pros: Steady and hard working. Has good
footwork and technique and works on his craft. Occupies his man and finishes
his blocks. Generally gets good leverage. Cons: Not a dominating run blocker. Doesn’t get enough push when
blocking straight ahead. Doesn’t have great quickness and will always
struggle against speed rushers. Overall:
Solid starter. Lisa’s take: Could
be a Pro-bowl OG, but it’s hard to find a decent LT. He has played a lot of
games with injuries that other players would have been out with, and Jeff is
a warrior who doesn’t let out that he’s even hurt. Unless a stud comes along,
Jeff will stay at LT |
|
Damion Woody 6-3.0,

#1 OG |
’04: Played 16 games, 16 starts. Pros: Great size, strength and athleticism.
Moves very well and is a great pull blocker. Has solid technique. Get good
position in pass protection. Cons: Not
a fiery competitor. Was never a natural at center because he couldn’t master
a shotgun snap. Overall: Excellent
starter. Lisa’s take: He didn’t
have as much of an effect early on, but you could see the difference during
games, when he was on the sidelines with the groin strain. He was a definite
upgrade. Not sure he was worth all that money, but they had to do something.
I think he would be better at LG, but they needed him between Raiola &
McDougle. I don’t understand the comment about him not being a fiery
competitor. He seemed pretty ticked in the interviews I saw. |
|
Stockar McDougle 6-5.0,
339, 5.17 |
|
28 |
527.35 |
#1 RT |
’04: Played 16 games, 16 starts. Pros: Massive, strong player, Can
engulf and overwhelm opponents when run blocking. Cons: Doesn’t have great quickness or agility. Gets heavy. When
he gains weight, he’s too stiff and too slow to do the job. Makes mental errors.
Overall: Adequate starter. Lions: They would like him back but
won’t break the bank. |
|
Dominic Raiola-OC 6-2.0,
295, 4.99 |
Contract |
27 |
507.48 |
#1 OC |
’04: Played 16 games, 16 starts. Pros: Very quick and athletic, with adequate
size. Plays hard. Has become a better technician who gets good position when
pass blocking. Blocks well in space and against a moving target. Can long
snap. Con: Isn’t very powerful.
Still developing as a pass blocker. Overall:
Good starter. Lions: They are
trying to re-sign him. @ ½-way through season, Morris started putting him in
situations he handles best--pulling and blocking on the move and he began to
look good. Re-signed 5yr/17.5M (4.6M
SB) contract. |
|
David Loverne 6-2.0,
290, 4.93 |
Contract |
29 |
495.44 |
#1 LG |
’04: Played 15 games, 13 starts. Pros: Good in-line blocker. Has some
pop and uses his hands well. Cons: Stiff
and straight-line-ish. Doesn’t have great foot speed or hip movement. Not a
great blocker in space. Overall: Stopgap
starter. Lisa’s take: This is a
pretty good assessment. He was better than I expected, but not good enough.
He was not intended to be the starter, but it was the best they could do. I
expect him to be a backup next year. |
|
Matt Joyce 6-7.0, 316,
5.27 |
Contract |
33 |
485.39 |
#2 LT/OG |
’04: Played 12 games, 3 starts. Pros: Great height and wingspan.
Smart player who doesn’t beat himself. Can play anywhere on the line. Won’t
kill you if he starts at LT for a few games. Cons: Athletically limited. Doesn’t have the quickness or power
to be a regular at either tackle position for a good team. Overall: A fine backup. Lisa’s Take: He’s a versatile and
dependable backup, who I expected to beat out Loverne for starting OG. But
his versatility was of more value? May be too tall to make it at OG;
sometimes bends at the waste and loses leverage. |
|
Victor Rogers 6-6.1,
331, 5.51 |
RFA/7th |
26 |
380.70 |
#2 RT |
’04: Pros: Huge, thick, and powerful blocker. Excellent straight-line run
blocker. Has a decent wingspan and gets the job done in pass protection. Cons: Had 7 knee surgeries in
college, and more problems in pros. Can get sloppy with footwork and
fundamentals, preferring to just occupy his man. Very slow! Overall: Adequate backup. Lions: Very little experience but
could be insurance in case they don’t bring McDougle back / with |
|
Kelly Butler 6-7.3, 318, 5.11 |
Contract |
23 |
373.34 |
#3 OT |
’04: Played 0 games, 0 starts. Pros: Has great height and wingspan.
Has excellent overall strength and can stay low despite his height. Uses his
hands well and can drive block. Gets a good punch. Very smart &
dedicated. Cons: Slow-footed. Can
get beaten to the edge at left tackle. Doesn’t have outstanding balance and
will cross his feet. Doesn’t have the high-end agility to mirror moves. Overall: Long-range prospect. Lisa’s take: Word is that he is
pretty raw and that he has never had great coaching. Is a local product who
didn’t have a lot experience in high-school and only 3 yrs of Purdue’s
coaching. There is a lot of upside and was initially ranked as a 2nd
rounder in the 2004 draft. With Pat Morris as his position coach I’m
optimistic. Definitely needs to work on technique, but the basic skills are
there. |

’04: Played 11 games, 0 starts. Pros: Versatile, and can play RG or
OC. Cons: Not great at either
position. Slow. Overall: Decent
backup. Lions: Had a surprisingly
good showing in final game, earned a contract. |

technique. Could be more physical and intense. Overall: Solid starter. Jets’
Pt of View: He could return if the money isn’t too outrageous. But they have
other alternatives and he’s represented by Kevin Poston…so the odds of
demands not being outrageous are low../ Giants

for 300+ pounder. Surprisingly light on his feet and strong in-line blocker.
Talent is there to be a Pro-Bowler, but it hasn’t come together for him Cons: His weight can balloon, and
there are questions about his motivation, lazy work habits, and erratic
performances. Got a lot of false starts, initiated two fights with teammates,
and missed meetings. Underachiever. Overall:
He’s a very good starter when in shape. ’04 wasn’t a good year, as he
regressed. Saint’s Pt of View: Team officials never really warmed to him and
