Fort Wilderness Campground at Walt Disney World

Fort Wilderness

Maiden Voyage:

Our first trip was in April of 2001.  We went down to Fort Wilderness Campground in Walt Disney World for two weeks.  Probably not the best trip to try out a new pop-up.  Our first stop (Tennessee) we discovered a major water leak.  The hose that supplies water to the outside shower broke off causing a waterfall out the slide out.  After capping off the line we were all set.

Traveling down the expressway I noticed the slide-out side was loose.  This was a problem throughout all our traveling.  Also the electronic brakes stopped working.  Now I know they say to camp close on your first trip :)  The brakes was caused by a wire that pulled loose.

After arriving at Fort Wilderness we noticed the countertop was warping.  Further investigating showed the faucet was leaking.  Home Depot had a replacement faucet and we survived the two weeks.  Actually the trip was great and Fort Wilderness was a nice experience.

After we got back home I took the trailer to the dealer with my list of problems and had it back in about two weeks.

The Campground:

Walt Disney World is one of the places you must take your kids at least once in their lifetime.  However expect to spend lots of money.  This was by far the most expensive campground we have ever stayed at.  We decided to stay on Disney property to take advantage of the bus transportation.  Well I was very disappointed in the transportation and ended up driving to the theme parks.  It took at least one hour and up to two hours to get to any theme park (except the Magic Kingdom).  The campground was well kept however and the bathrooms were relatively clean.  You will need a bike or rent a golf cart to move around the campground.  This place is big.

If we decide to go to Disney again, I will stay off site. The real advantage of staying at Fort Wilderness was the transportation and since it took too long the advantage is gone.  I could save three times the cost of the campground by staying off site and still get a decent campground.  Plus we did not spend much time at the campground anyway.
