ENF Most Valuable Students Compete for Scholarships of up to $60,000

Chicago, Illinois--Applications are available for students who want to contend for the title of Elks National Foundation's (ENF) Most Valuable Student, and for a scholarship of up to $60,000.  The male and female first-place winners each receive $60,000 scholarships; second and third place receive $40,000 and $20,000 respectively, and the 494 runner-ups receive $4,000 scholarships.

The ENF launched the MVS contest in 1933-34, when a single student received a one time, $1,000. scholarship.  In 2005, the Foundation will award a total of $2,216 million in four year scholarships to 500 national finalists.

Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.  Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.  Males and females compete separately, and are judged based on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.

"The freedom this scholarship provides me with is endless, and immeasurably precious," said Collin Stecker, the 2004 MVS male top winner, while thanking the Elks at the Grand Lodge convention in Minneapolis. "I won't have to worry about working myself to exhaustion in an effort to pay tuition.  I can't emphasize enough how much of an impact this has on me.  I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Making a gift to the Foundation supports children like Collin in communities across the country.  The number of applications each state is eligible to submit is based on the state's total donations since the Foundation's establishment, compared with the overall total donations the Foundation has received since inception.

Applications are available online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars; by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Elks National Foundation; or by visiting a local Nebraska Elks Lodge.  Students must submit applications to their local Elks Lodge by January 14, 2005. The Elks National Foundation will announce the 500 national winners, and notify them in writing, around May 16, 2005.
