Norfolk Elks Holds Youth Awards Dinner
The Norfolk Elks Lodge held its annual Youth Recognition and Awards Dinner on
Monday, May 3rd. One hundred fifteen youth, parents, family members, and
Elks attended the dinner.
Norfolk City Councilwomen Vicki Saunders addressed the audience on leadership
and the sacrifices the students would need to make to continue to be leaders at
their schools and in their communities.
After the speech, fifty-one students were honored and received Certificates of
Merit from the Norfolk Elks Lodge. Haley Kampschnieder of the Howells
Catholic Elementary School and Braydon Kopejtka of the Newman Grove Elementary
School received $50 Savings Bonds from the Nebraska State Elks President Dick
Metz for capturing first place awards in the state for their Third Grade Drug
Awareness Coloring Contest entries.
Also winning state level awards in scholarship competition were Kristen Koch of
Laurel-Concord High School, Travis Anderson of Newman Grove High School, and
Jason Urbanec of Bancroft-Roslie High School.
The Norfolk Elks Teens of the Month for the past year were introduced to the
audience and the Teens of the Year were named. They were Kristen Koch of
Laurel-Concord high School and Amanda Gasper of Newman Grove High School.
Both these students will receive on-time scholarship stipends from the Norfolk
Elks Lodge.
The naming of the Youth Volunteers of the Year followed. Staci Witzel of
Madison High School was named for her work in her community and at the Norfolk
Veterans Home. The second Volunteer of the Year award went to Mrs. Jenni
Canham's Sixth Grade Class at Sunny Meadows School. They were honored for
their work with the Norfolk Elks and their participation in the
"Valentines for Vets" program at the Norfolk Veterans Home.
