The Siege of Louisbourg (1745) took place when a New England colonial force aided by a British fleet captured Louisbourg, the capital of the French province of Ile-Royale (present-day Cape Breton Island) during the War of the Austrian Succession, known as King George's War in the British colonies.
Louisbourg was an important bargaining chip in the peace negotiations to end the war, since it represented a major British success. Factions within the British government were opposed to returning it to the French as part of any peace agreement, but these were eventually overruled, and Louisbourg was returned, over the objections of the victorious colonists, to French control after the 1748 Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. The war is named after the main leader of the Native American side, Metacom, known to the English as "King Philip." A treaty was finally signed at Casco Bay in April 1678.
According to a combined estimate of loss of life in Schultz and Tougais' King Philip's War, The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict, 800 out of 52,000 English colonists and 3,000 out of 20,000 Native Americans lost their lives due to the war. Proportionately, it was one of the bloodiest and costliest wars in the history of North America. More than half of New England's ninety towns were assaulted by Native American warriors.

On 18 May 1676, Captain William Turner of the Massachusetts Militia and a group of about 150 militia volunteers attacked a large fishing camp of hungry Native Americans at Peskeopscut on the Connecticut River (now called Turners Falls, Massachusetts). The colonists claimed they killed 100-200 Native Americans. Turner and nearly 40 of the militia were killed during the retreat.
